starter issues in a 2.7 to 3.2 engine swap

I switched from a 2.7 to a 3.2 useing my 76 915 trans and a sachs alu flywheel assembly I had put on the old engine. The starter spins but will not engage the ring gear. the total travel of the gear is approx 4cm. I measured the distance from the face of the starter mount to the face of the ring gear and it appears I need about 6cm of travel to completely engage the starter and ring gear. Is this a starter issue or does it relate to the flywheel assembly?

Would appreciate any Info.....thanks

The starter is the same for 74-89 but the starter RING GEAR is different. That might the issue holding you back.
I don't know the exact differences but here is info from the pelican catalog-

I too Replaced my 2.7 In my 1976 Porsche 911S with a 3.2 I had to use a 9 BOLT 3.0 Flywell. It works just fine.

well, maybe the ring gear is not there. the teeth on a 3.2 flywheel are not starter teeth. they are there for the sensor. the starter teeth go on over the pressure plate. just a wild guess.

More than a few persons have made that mistake.

John....it appears that is exactly what I did wrong. I only have one set of gears on. The next question is does the order the gears are installed matter or can they only go on one way?
