Replaced Alternator - Fuel Smell - Connected?

Hi All - I Just had an alternator replaced on my 79 911 SC. Got it back from the shop and there is a VERY strong fuel smell inside, potentially coming from the AC vent and/or defrost. I initially thought it was due to filling it up right when I left the shop, but it has been a few days now, and several trips/miles (over 60), and the fuel smell is of head-ache proportion...even with the windows down. It gets worse when the car is running Vs. sitting for a while. Can replacing the Alternator potentially lead to an issue that may be causing the fuel smell? Any places you would recommend checking to diagnose? Thanks!

They could have forgotten to replace some of the hoses to the vapor emissions system on your car. There is a fitting on the shroud that forces air through hoses to pruge the fumes held in the evaporator box, and return them to the charcoal canister which, I think in your car, is located in the engine compartment. If the hoses are disconnected, it's possible that fumes are being forced into the engine compartment, instead of the canister or the intake mainfold. You may want to do a quick check of all hoses back there--you also may need a mirror to see behind the throttle body/air filter.-

ossiblue has a good point, that should be your first check. However, if you don't see anything obvious like unconnected hoses, be prepared to check for broken fuel supply lines and such...you'll need to have the motor running in order to perform this check.

raw fuel and Porsche motors aren't a good combination. Keep an extinguisher handy at all times.

The first thing to do is take it back to the mechanic. He knows what he did.

Update - issue resolved

Sorry for the late update folks. It was not related to the alternator fix. Just in need of a new fuel line. I use an excellent shop in the CLT area...if they had caused it, they would have let me know. Quick line replacement, and I'm good to go without having to keep the windows down and the top off.
