Post Bad CV joint?

OK... I know this is going to be ugly. But just how bad is it?

[img]http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/image_uploads/911 CV joint
right rear - 1985 Cab.JPG[/img]

The car is a 1985 ROW 911 Cabriolet with a somewhat unknown past. The right rear CV joint is way out of round; sorta looks like a "D" shaped oval race track turned on its side. Last week, I rented a hot water pressure washer system to clean the underbody and get a better look at the problem (a few oil stains linger). Ouch... ignorance is definitely bliss, but now I can clearly see it and know I have to do something!

What's the diagnosis and what's it going to take to repair? A new CV joint certainly looks in order, but should I do the other side, too (left)? Also, would buying a complete axle be a safer, more complete way to go? Finally, what about the wheel bearings... do you think they may have been affected?

Thanks for your input(s).

OK, no image. I'm working on it. In the meantime, any feedback is welcome!

WHOA! i can definitely say that the CV boot needs to be replaced. the CV is possibly damaged too.

both sides? no, not at all, just replace the one that is busted. clean, repack, and replace the ones on the other side.

is the wheel bearing damaged? probably not, but it would be a good time to check it.

i've done 924 and 944 halfshafts before, EASY EASY EASY. not sure about the 911 though. my guess is that it would not be much harder, if at all. i've seen them sitting on a table and they don't look too different.

good luck!

Thanks for the help with the pic, Obin, and also the advice. Yes, the CV joint is dented on the bottomside... pushed out toward the wheel by stress, perhaps? I knew the boot was history, but the hot water cleaning displayed a lot more.

Thanks again.

BTW... what did you do to the pic to make it work?

might as well pull both axles, inspect all four cv's and repack. Messy but not that difficult. If you search on this site you'll find a similar topic with links to a very helpful websight describing the process on a VW Bus. If you can't find I can post the URL when I get home tonight.
