930 brake squeel

I am running OE Textar pads on a 79 930 and the brake squeel at low speeds is not tolerable. The rotors are new. I tried the thin metal shims. Didn't help. Are there any peticular pads that wont squeel? As you roll up to a red light, it's wicked bad.

I use Metal-Master Brake Pads and they don't squeal and there isn't any brake dust. I've been very happy with them. I've done spirited driving and novice DE events. But, YMMV.

Your '79 930 has the racing-style floating rotors. Therefore rotors are allowed to "slide" back & forth on the fasteners that hold it to rotor "hat" and the axle hub. No brake pad is going to alleviate that squealing.

Yes, good call! Somehow I missed the year...

Textars are usually pretty quiet, did you check the piston orientation? Like S & A the pistons need to be at the proper angle

the floating rotors(if you still have them) will rattle at low speeds but not usually squeel, though I suppose they could if they were worn

Good info guys. So, do I lube up the sliding fastners? I assume the piston orientation is in the shop manual. Someone else put the new rotors on. I think they already put on a thin coat of never seize on the fastners. The noise is under 5mph at you roll to a stop. It sure catches the attention of those standing in the crosswalk.

My brakes squeal--944 Turbo calipers and rotors on a modified SC. Hell, I consider it part of the character of the car. Not that mine's a racecar, just the occasional track day, but racecar brakes of that era pretty much all squeal.

Not w/ the right pads

Well, in a racecar obviously the right pads are the ones that work best as brakes, not the ones that don't squeal. I've heard plenty of excellent competition cars with squealing brakes, and not just DE-day Porsches but real racecars.

even in a race car w/ race pads squeeling can be almost eliminated by keeping things clean

my personal experience
944t/964 calipers Textar & Pagid blue, no squeel as long as they are kept clean
993RS Textar & Pagid Blue & Pagid Yellow, no squeel as long as they are kept clean, the yellow track pads do squeel more quickly as mung builds during a days use and they are much better hot.

I've had some cars with the Brembos and Textars squeal- 993 with stock brakes (Textar pads) and my 993 brake conversion on the '87 911. I filed the leading edges of the pads and that took care of the problem.

I'll agree that my '86 944 Turbo calipers and either Textar stock pads or PF97 track pads don't necessarily squeal. Only if i've street-driven the car too long with the PF97 pads do they start to squeal a slight bit at the end of a stop. Once I get some heat back in the rotors from the track duty and "shine" the rotors, the squealing goes away. I supposed that's what I get for using pads not intended to operate at such low temps

I have a 79 930 and I use Porterfield R4-S pads for the street and have NO squeal at all.

+1 on the Porterfields, or try PBR Ultimate (ceramic).
