Gearbox oil
What do you guys use as gearbox oil on the pre-964 cars? I can't get Swepco here in Brazil, so this is not an option.
Is it Ok to use synthetic based oil on the older gearboxes? Thanks in advance

It's more specific to what transmission you have rather than what model car it is. For the 915 trans. it's Sweptco or any approved gear oil. The G50 needs synthetic fluid like M1 gear oil. You can order Sweptco from our host but wondering how much is shipping to Brazil?

Any good GL-5 rated non-synthetic 75w-90 will do the job.
915's really suffer with synthetic oils as they are too slippery for the Porsche baulk-ring syncros to work correctly and excess wear is the result.

Peter Zimmerman says: Trans oil = Kendall Three Star 80W/90 Dino - make sure you check for Limited Slip!"

I guess I have to ask- what's cheaper, the cost of shipping a couple gallons of Swepco to Brazil, or rebuilding a 915 because it's been run with gear oil not up to the task?
I'm sure Pelican or LN Engineering could ship the Swepco to you. Or Steve Weiner.

Steve said it:
"Any good GL-5 rated non-synthetic 75w-90 will do the job." And JW uses that same oil and we all know about his reputation and experience with 915 transmissions. He rebuild my 915 and didn't recommend Swepco on the grounds that the extra expense wasn't justified and GL-5 rated 75W90 was just fine. I think that Swepco is mistakenly regarded is some kind of miracle fluid that will rectify problems in a 915 and avoid rebuilding. ![]() 911GT2: Can you get a GL-5 rated 75W90 or 80W90?

Brazil should be hot enough for 85W90.
![]() Here it's cooler and 75W90 is the norm. Enjoy. ![]()

Synthetics can leak from older gearboxes - some of the gasket technology used back in the day wasn't very resistant to synthetics.
