Update
Wow Doug !! That looks awesome. Can't wait to see the chassis when it comes home. I see Fuel injection... what's the plan?? Engine management?? Probably gonna be an easier route than my mechanical set up.

Slowly progressing through final paint and body work. Wish it was going quicker, but reality is free time is limited right now anyway. I am sure many others can relate to the situation... would be nice to have it back but frustrating not to have time to work on it!

Never officially measured the CR... just know it will be more than 8.5 and less than 9.0. Hope your E is progressing!

Update needed...
... but it was a slow year on the project. Main thing that got tackled was recovering the interior bits with smooth black German vinyl:
Dash parts (Dave at TRE helped with the main piece, I did the dash top, and the wifey did the knee guard): ![]() ![]() Door toppers and quarter window trim (Tony at Autobahn did the door tops, wife and I did the quarter toppers): ![]() ![]() ![]() I can't believe how long it took to get them all DONE, wrapped up, and stashed in the cabinet. It took a village on that one... Next item up was to redo these: ![]() ![]() They are all 7x15 .41 wheels. I got all my research done, purchased supplies, started stripping paint, then promptly got distracted by other project(s)! Soon. Going to do something RSR-ish with paint on all surfaces. The chassis is still holding me up. I will share a couple pics from the body shop. Here is how it looked late summer: ![]() Metal work done, doors fit with happy gaps, front fenders/hood checked out, lots of primer and sanding. It looked awesome. Latest info indicates color has been applied to hood and doors: ![]() Not sure where things stand with the front and rear bumper fitting, but I can make an educated guess ![]() Hoping 2014 is the year! Great to see you posting again Doug. It's easy to get slowed down with our busy lives. The paint looks great so far. I think my Orange car was in the paint shop for over a year! I'm be watching with interest as you get into the reassembly process. Cheers, Greg

Just came across your thread Doug. I admire your work and attention to detail. I'm at about the same stage as you with my build. I'm particularly interested in how you are going to finish off the rims-there are so many variations out there.

Don't over do the wheels.....here's a different option strip the anodise, bead blast and clear anodise with no polishing.. suitably industrial . At least I think so

Thanks Greg. Watched your videos of the orange car multiple times and with a big grin on my face. Glad I was able to contribute a little bit to getting that one back on the road. Very inspiring for me. Like I said... sure hope 2014 is a big one for my R!

Wheels...
Going to go with a 100% painted wheel solution as I have nothing to loose and am hoping I end up with something that is easier to take care of in the long run. I will start with the raw wheel (since it is in the worst condition of the 4) and see what I can get. Planning on gray pedal faces and no polished surfaces to tone them down a bit...

Look what came home last weekend...
![]() Miracle of miracles... a painted car in my garage: ![]() ![]() First job was both ceremonial and practical. Many moons ago the FIRST thing I finished restoring for the car was a set of later stock door handles, so they went on first along with the door stays to keep everything in check: ![]() ![]() I have started cleaning things up from life at the painter's and pulled all the nice "new" fuel lines I had installed for the carb'ed engine. Need to upgrade the whole set up for higher pressure to run the EFI. At least the pump will still work fine: ![]() Kind of a bummer to take out all that nice stuff I worked so hard on, but it is for a good cause. Very glad to be back at it! More to come.

Sorta back to where I was...
The to-do list focuses on getting the powertrain installed, so I started in the back. I had to touch up the insides of both quarter panels due to work done by the painter. Think scrub, POR-15, seam seal, paint, etc. Been there before... was not too happy to be there again, but it is done.
The engine bay got pretty messed up being (over) exposed at the painter's, so I went back thru and cleaned it up: ![]() ![]() ![]() Ahhh, much better. While I am waiting for fuel system parts, I jumped into the EFI install. Gotta get this in while the access is good: ![]() ECU roughed in: ![]() After all the time I spent welding closed holes on this chassis, it was tough to drill those 2 pass thrus! Spaghetti in the engine bay: ![]() So the fun fact is that adds about 30 wires to the engine bay for the setup I will be running. And that was after removing all the wires from the connectors I didn't need, and there is a power harness to add, and lots more wires on the engine, and and and. But, considering I was a little psych'ed out about it one week ago, I am happy to have it installed and feel like I have my head around the whole idea. I have since labeled everything in the engine bay and on the motor and all wires are present and accounted for. Oh and here is a nice shot of it sitting out in the bright sun a couple weeks ago: ![]() Lovin' the color. It will just get better and better as I add more bits to the car....
