Post Update - MFI Pump Problem

Hello,

I have an update regarding my previous postings about lack of combustion in cylinder number three.

After extensive testing of the ignition and injector, I isoloated the problem to a dry pump output on cylinder number three. Next I pulled the check valve out of the top of the pump on that cylinder and examined it. It seemed to be in fine working order.

Today, I pulled the MFI pump off the car for further examination. Upon removing the driver's side cover plate, I noticed a small shard of metal that seemed to be laying at the rim of the piston and cylinder wall on the number three plunger. Upon further inspection, it turned out that this small piece of metal was actually LODGED between the piston and the cylinder!! I then rotated the belted drive pulley and sure enough, that piston was SIEZED in its cylinder!!

At this point I cannot tell if that plunger has grenaded itself and left remnants for the pump to eat, or if that piece of metal is just some random piece of metal that non-chalantly made its way through the pump and found just the wrong place to come to rest. I am thinking probably the former.

Anyway, off to Gus with the thing. Anyone here have any direct experience working with PFI? I am sure they are great, just wondering what to expect cost wise. I am thinking of packing the throttle body housings as well, since the bushings are a bit loose in there. Any ideas on cost to rebuild these?

Thanks,

JA

6 yrs ago, gus rebuilt mine and recalibrated it for $ 700.00. That included him testing all injectors and, a little book that showed how to adjust the pump. I would think it is more now though. He has a pump in the shop that is cut in half and shows just how the pump works.

Cool

At least 10 years ago I sent Gus an E-pump to rebuild. I remember so well the discussion. I told him what I wanted, and he asked me how much the car weighed. He's a very good rebuilder. I have never had a problem with the pump.

Good luck,
David Duffield

I have discussed pump rebuilds with him recently and he said $600-$1000. Sounds like yours is worst case. Expect to pay $500+ for the throttle body rebuild, mine are at Eurometrix right now.
