What are the consequences of removing the trim from the rear window seal on my '80 targa? To make a long story short, when they were reinstalling the rear window last year, they had a hell of a time trying to get the seal to stay on the window, keep the trim stuck in the seal all while trying to get the window in the car. After several hours they got the window in the car, but the driver side trim piece was not fully seated in it's groove and started to pop out, so I just yanked it out. I've been driving around with only the passenger side trim which looks stupid. Should I just yank out the other trim or cough up the bucks to have the window pulled and reinstalled? I had to call about 30 glass shops before I found one that was even willing to work on the rear targa window. Evidently, they've already heard the horror stories......

Several months ago, I yanked mine out before I found out you need to take out and re-install the glass in order to get the trim back in. Knowing this, I just drove around for a couple months without trim. Well, being bored one day, I attempted to re-install the trim without taking the glass out. It worked! Here's what I did:
* I have an '81 so I re-painted the trim black before installing. * Next, I lubicated the seal (inside the grooves too) and a long piece of speaker wire with dish soap. * Run the wire inside the grove and push it towards the bottom. * Place the trim on the groove ( with the wire underneath). * Now, while pushing down on the trim, gently pull the wire downwards being careful not to rip the seal. If you do, you're SOL. * Make sure you apply pressure on the trim where you're pulling the wire making sure that the seal goes over the lip of the trim. This took me several attempts and a couple hours, and not to mention a lot of patience. Good luck! John '81SC Targa |
