My son Erik has developed a process for restoring crazed shift knobs...

Banned but not out, yet..

It would be very helpful if you could post some before and after pics - as well as the years you restore. Thanks

I have to agree. A picture is worth a thousand words as the old saying goes.

NOTE: if the pics in this thread aren't loading 914world.com may be down. check back later....
will try to get after photos up Monday night... He never touches the shift pattern part That part stays in its current state. Only the outer surface of the black part and the clear cover are refinished. If you would like him to do one for you, he would be happy to. Send your knob along with your return address, and $81.25 to Erik Flesburg 2831 Chesney Ct. Centerville, OH 45458 Last edited by ISpeed2day; 10-09-2008 at 10:31 AM.. |

So the outer surface of the shift pattern can't be restored or the owner chose not to have this done? Thanks,

Just a little hobby paint and a fine brush can make that look like brand new and if you get the color just close enough the sun should help make it match over time too. I would start offering a pattern "touch up" for an additional fee. I would stress to clients that it won't immediately match but should be close.

Does the new clear cover have the same dome shape as the original?
It does look nice and clear without the scratches but I couldn't tell if the dome was still there? Last edited by bluesky; 10-20-2008 at 07:07 PM.. |

yes the dome is still there, no we cant fix what is underneath (please use a knob that isn't as damaged as the one we used for the pictures... this was a "worst case senerio" to show what can be fixed. yes it still retains the dome shape His work fixes the "crazing" on the original clear plastic and the black plastic as well. |

Next we will post before and after pics of what we consider to be a "good candidate" for restoration...
