Inner CV joint assembly?
I need some help. I have dismantled the inner CV joint, cleaned it and now want to put it back together (4 months later). The first part to go onto the shaft is the boot and hose clamps, but the next is the concave washer.
What way should the concave washer be assembled, with the outer edge touching the ball hub? The ball hub, which way should it be installed on the shaft (after the hub, balls, cage and housing has been assembled), with the flat side towards the shaft or the ridged side toward the shaft? I have attached a few pics to explain: Inner CV joint assembly? - Early 911S Registry Bulletin Board Thanks John

Thanks for the picture, that was what I initially thought, but look at the last picture in my post at the 911Sreg, there is an inprint on the flat side that matches the washer! Would not that indicate that the flat side should be facing the washer/shaft?
thanks John

The CV joints are usually installed so that the circumferential line going around the outside of the joint body is facing outward (see the picture on the box), but really it does not matter.
San Jose CA - I'm doing cv joints - need some tips/tools |

When refurbishind the CV's on my '80 SC, I found that I could get a new running surface by just simply interchanging the CV's without changing the rotation of the shafts.
Example for the left side: Remove axle, mark position and rotation on the shaft, remove CV's keeping track of inside/outside position, clean and inspect. If no galling is found, grease and re-assemble. If galling is found, move the outer CV to the inside and the inside CV to the outside. Ignore the line-groove on the outside of the hub, it doesn't matter where it ends up. Do the same for the right axles. This way, the axles still end up having the same rotation as before but the balls have a new running surface. Cannot be done for Carrera CV's.

From an engineering point of view, the washer's concave side presses against the hub to apply pressure when fully assembled once the circlip is on. Some have enough room to do this with little pressure applied but some may be tighter and need a press to compact the concave washer enough to install the circlip.
Installing the washer the other way around makes no sense; might as well just use a regular flat washer. There is a reason why the washer is concave. If it doesn't fit, I suspect that you may have mixed up the shafts/CV's and they no longer have the original respective position? Or it'll need a press or similar devise to compress the washer enough to get the circlip on. ![]()

Yep, that looks good, concave facing the hub.
Look at the drawing on this thread: Inner CV joint assembly? - Early 911S Registry Bulletin Board You'll notice under re-assemble No. 5 that the shaft is in a press meaning the hub is pressed down to allow the circlip to be installed. It may just take a little pressure and you'll have to be inventive to do it without a press. I edited my earlier reply to avoid confusion. ![]()

I built this press when I did my rear bearings. It worked like a charm on the hub/cv-sharft! CV's are now ready to be installed on my 71 911S.

Just put the snap ring on as far as it will go then find a socket that fits over the shaft and against the clip and hit it with a hammer. The washer will compess and the clip will snap
into the groove.

After I pressed the hub in with the press, the snap ring fitted on without a problem.
