Question CARRERA OIL COOLER Stock or Aftermarket

I'm trying to select a Carrera type oil cooler for my SC. Anyone have advice on whether to choose stock or aftermarket? How much should one expect to pay for a used stock unit?

The general consensus is that the widemouth coolers available from Elephant Racing are the best. Accordingly, they're the most expensive. I think the cooler is around $400-$500, but with the brackets, fittings, fans, etc my guess would be $800 for the whole project. But you could expect to be completely satisfied with this setup. If you talk to Chuck at ER he can tell you exactly what you need.

Used stock... saw one today for $250 I think, but I think others I've seen have been more than that. Not sure if it would include everything you need.

Just my $0.02

How much better is the Elephant racing oil cooler, I'm looking at a Carrera stock cooler (fender) with a fan , complete kit used for about $1000.

I'm planning on a 3.6 conversion, would I need more cooling or would the Carrera stock unit (or) Elephant racing cooler be enough?

Anyone with info please help

Two Carrera coolers (one in each fender) or a single, large front mount would be best for a 3.6.

Go with the stock cooler/fan like I did, and install a 200F sensor for the fan.

Be certain that you get the brackets and all misc hardware.

You will probably have to buy the parts individually.

Keep an eye on the used parts forum.

There's a recent post where a p/p member is removing his from an '87?

Also there is a 28 row cooler for sale on eBay.
I have been told that those coolers do not need a fan.

You may pm me.

Good luck,

Gerry

I bought the Elephant Racing Widemouth Cooler for my SC and have been very happy with it. Chuck was very helpful. Either way, it helps to get airflow to the cooler. Consider installing either the airscoop or a notched bumper.

Thanks for the replies guys. Right now I'm leaning more toward the Elephant Racing Kit because I'm going to use the car as a weekend/track car. From what I understand, a fan is only required for lots of stop and go driving. I hope the Elephant Racing unit is enough for a 3.6 conversion running on the track?

Be cautious when buying a used oil cooler. You want to be certain that the oil cooler you are looking to purchase came from an engine with no failures. The last thing you want is to start dumping metal shavings from a blown engine into your engine.

As someone who has purchased a used oil cooler, I'd probably suggest just buying a new one of the elephant oil coolers off of pelican. I believe I paid $300 for the cooler then had it inspected and cleaned for another $100 or so. In my opinion having new parts is worth that added cost when it comes to something as critical as an oil cooler.

As others have mentioned I do believe most running a 3.6L use more than 1 carerra oil cooler.

Rick,

Glad you're satisfied with the Elephant Racing cooler. The widemouth opening of any cooler regardless it is OEM Carrera cooler or after-market cooler has no effect on the flow or cooling of oil in the process. The flow of oil is determined by the closing/opening of the auxiliary thermostat in 911. This is a MYTH!!!! You could put the biggest tube diameter to the cooler you could possibly install and the flow rate won't be affected at all. It is the restriction of flow by the auxiliary thermostat that controls the movement of hot oil in the auxiliary cooler. Not the WIDE mouth fitting. The ER cooler is a good auxiliary cooler because of its ability to achieve sufficient heat transfer like factory cooler.

You will most certainly need two coolers when running a 3.6 in your SC, on the track. Fender mount plus a medium sized center mount is one option. OR run one very larger center mount, but that will also require our RSR style oil cooler deflector pan (or similar mod) . OR one cooler in each fender.
We installed two fender mount coolers in BB2, and other cars , and they work quite well when you have adequate air flow thru them.

The latest RSA backdate to 73 RS look has one 60 row earls cooler in each front fender, shrouded with 6" pusher fans for traffic duty

Many years ago, I faced your very dilema. After taking the power steering pump off the 964 3.6 motor, I retrofitted an on motor oil cooler to suplement my Carrera front cooler. Has run cool as a cucumber lo these 18yrs. Check out my thread on the subject.

Tony,
You are correct about the widemouth. As I understand the pumping on the 911, it is a positive displacement pump, meaning that the flow through the cooler or coolers will be constant regardless of the restriction. The thing that will vary is the pressure at the pump. There are some really nice articles on positive discplacement pumps on the board.

It was nice talking with you the other day. Look forward to seeing you and Alvin in Hershey. Cam and I will be there.
Rick
