Valve Guides

Hi Guys,

Was wondering if someone could give me a rough estimate of time and effort required to change all the valve guides in a 1986 Carrera if the engine is already removed form the car.

Thanks

just did this, but need more info, are you doing this yourself? the guides drill out, sometimes they will press out, but i would have your mach. shop ass. them. I did all my own tear down, took heads to a real Porsche mach. shop. They installed all new valves, guides, springs and retainers, trued up the sealing surface. Price was around 1700.00

Thanks for the reply, I really don't have any more info, I was told that the valve guides should be replaced in my car as they seemed a weak point in the leakdown test and also a slight smell while decel and downshift coming to a stop. I am going to have the engine and transmission out later this month for a rebuild of the transmission and just wanted to know if replacing at that time was a good idea as I was told you have to remove the engine to do it. I just noticed that the valve gudies themselves were only about 5 bucks each from our host, but it sounds like this would be an expensive item to add at this point, I was kind of hoping maybe an hour or two of labour since the engine was out, obvioulsey I have no idea, I am not too mechanically inclined

if i did the whole job, engine R&R also, it's 30 hours labor, plus parts. parts vary, depending on what shows up during the teardown and how much the customer wants to spend. you don't just replace the guides. you also machine the valve seats.

and usually replace the springs and retainers - My springs - even after 57,000 were pretty tired.
