911 converts to 930 body style

Hi All,

I just got my 1987 911 carrera coupe and planning to convert its body style to 930. I have been checking out the parts from varies websites and not sure about what stuffs needed to do the job. Any suggestions? Do you know how much it will cost? The carrera I got has everything in its original parts and the interior and exterior are in great condition (it only have 93k on it) . I am also concern if I converts it to 930 it might depreciate its value. Any suggestion is appreciated.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.
If you're concerned about depreciating the value of your 911 don't convert it. It sounds like a wonderful car already. If your heart is set on owning a wide body sell your '87 and buy a 930 or a turbo look M491. There's a few out there for sale right now and they'll be much more valuable down the road compared to a modified or "chopped up" '87.

+1

If you want a fake M491, you would be better to buy one already done instead of converting what sounds like a nice, original Carrera.

The cost of conversion will depend on where you source the parts, the shop that does the work(if you can't), and the level of converting you want done. The true M491 had Turbo brakes and suspension components.

Whatever you decide, it's YOUR car and you should do what YOU want to do.

Best wishes for whatever way you go.

Welcome to the forum, Happy.
Before you do anything drastic, hang on to the car in its original condition for awhile. I was thinking just like you when I got my '84. I loved the turbo look (still do) and planned on doing a conversion. Now that it's been sitting in my garage for awhile, I find I'm liking the original look (minus a few things ) and now plan to keep it "non-turbo look".
Besides, the good drivin' weather has just started here in the north. Drive it this year. If you still want to make the conversion next winter, go for it.

Congrats on your Carrera! It sounds like a VERY nice original example! With only 93K miles, it's still a "baby"!

I agree with the others here..........if you want a Turbo look car, sell yours and go out and buy one. Converting your Carrera (which sounds in such nice condition) would definitely depreciate the value and will "ruin" it so to speak. It's worth more in the original condition.

If you want to get into a conversion project, I would suggest picking up a rough or non-original car to do something like this to. However, as another member mentioned above.......it is YOUR car and you can do whatever you want to do to it!

Just make sure YOU are happy and enjoy your car in the end!

BTW, happyprogrammer........if you do decide to convert, you should do it in STEEL! Don't mess around with the fiberglass parts. I've done this conversion and you will need:

-All 4 flares
-930 rocker panels or rocker panel extensions (to modify the ends of your existing rockers)
-930 rocker panel rubber trim
-930 Front "chin" spoiler"
-Rear 930 flare extensions
-Rear Turbo tail (if desired)
-You will also need wider wheels of course!

As far as cost of labor........you will need to do your "homework" and find someone that is competent to do such a task. Welding, bodywork and paint are something that you have to shop around for to find the best person for the job at the best price.

BTW, I have a friend with a COMPLETE conversion kit if you are interested. All parts are ORIGINAL Porsche steel parts. They were purchased from the dealer a number of years ago and are BRAND NEW never installed! Warning.......these parts will not be sold cheap though!

It's going to be expensive, front fenders used can be $1200 +/- each during my last check, rear flares and body work / paint, etc, etc. As for preserving your car, it's your car, it's not an investment, do what you like and have some fun with it.

You can have a lot of fun with it without doing a 930 body conversion though, front and rear bumpers, all manor of tails, 917 wheels or just 7's and 9's, GT3 seats, sterring wheel, not to mention suspension and exhaust and it's all reversable. Getting the stance right and the right wheels can make a huge difference. Also, you can lightly flare the fronts and get some bigger fronts for a more turbo look.

Ok.....I am have to weigh in for the other side....I LOVE BIG BUTTS I CANNOT LIE....I also have an 87 Carrera...I was told it was one of the nicest ones around...Not concourse...but a very nice street car....I made small changes to it for a couple years but was never really happy with it....So this winter I decided to take a plunge and make it the wide body I have dreamed of owning since I was a kid. And that was a LONG time ago. You can check out my progress at "yet another rendition begins" Do what makes you happy. Its your car. Its your money. The project can be done on a budget. Ask me how I know. I am NOT an owner with a lot of money to have somebody else build the car of my dreams. I am not interested in making my car a perfect clone of a factory race car. My project took on a life of its own when I found a set of fenders here for a reasonable price...then the quarters...then a phone call to find a set of bumpers I liked...then another phone call to have a set of wheels made...then more parts hunting from here...and there. I cannot afford to add a full race suspension. I won't be taking this car on the track anyway. I cannot afford to have a high dollar interior...But I found some seats hear and redid my interior to something I like. Will my car make it into a magazine...NO....that was not the intent of my build. I wanted to make the car into MY vision. I wanted to do it on a very tight budget. It can be done. Hopefully I will have my car back on the road in a few weeks. When the rendition will hopefully be completed.

Thank you guys for all the comments. I just joined this forum yesterday and I am liking it. This forum gives a lots of information more than what you can google on the web.

This is my first porsche, I have always wanting a porsche (specially 1980s one) since I was a kid. I got this car from a gentleman who also loves porsche and kept this car in great condition. I am now the 3rd owner of this car and I am loving it each day. 1987 carrera

I think I will keep it original as it is and maybe go with just minimal changes on wheels, bumpers, and spoilers. Do you have any suggestion on the front/rear bumper and spoilers?

Thank you all

(BTW, the reason I have ideas about converting to 930 is becuase of the car on this website
1987 Porsche 930 Turbo)

Sure. I have a suggestion (hey.... you asked).
Get rid of those big ugly rubber cubes on the rear bumper. I just finished the bumperette delete on my '84 and I'm very happy with how it looks. I chose to keep the rubber rub strips because I didn't have an easy way to hide the bumper bolts. Also, find yourself a tail. A 911 just doesn't look right without one (opinions vary, but mine's right). Suggestion #3: Start saying Por-sha if you don't say it like that already. There's nothing more annoying than someone trying to "talk cars" with you and they can't correctly pronounce Porsche, Countach, Modena, Stradale, etc.

Have fun, and post lots of pics!

Lot's of choices for bumpers, RUF is the most 80's looking, clean, and good looking, RSR style is cool too. Get some 9" rears. That's a clean looking car, more pics!

I would think the amount of money to do the conversion would make it prohibitive. Doesn't make a lot of sense to shell out $$$ on a conversion, building a car that will be worth less than it is currently.

Each to their own but if it were me I'd run it for a year and see how I feel next fall. If you still have your heart set on a wide body, do as Davewjunior said and sell your car to buy the car you want. It will be cheaper and a whole lot less work. Both of those mean you get to spend more time driving instead of working.

Just my .02c

Man that black car looks good as it is. Drive it for a while and get active with your local P-Club first. You will have a better idea of what you want after that.
