Question Polished Chrome Targa Bar?

I know this is sacrilege for many here, but I'm just wondering if anybody has ever seen a polished chrome Targa bar on an older 911? I'm just curious as to what it would look like. anyone?

Nah, not sacrilege. IMHO, the polished stainless steel (not chrome) Targa bar looks great on the early 911.

This topic has been covered a few times before. I attached a link to one of them, but it has no pictures. Do a search and you'll find a few pix of what you're looking for.

Some Mother's Metal Polish, an orbital buffer and A LOT of time and you'll be seeing your reflection. You'll have to re-do it every once in a while, but with the right colored car, it looks gorgeous. I have a 74 body (in Diamond Blue), so it has chrome trim everywhere which makes the polished Targa bar look perfectly matched. DO IT!

I plan on polishing the Targa bar on my 82 sc . The rims are chrome and I want them to match.

I'm not sure how it was done because that is how I purchased the car. I can tell you that the targa bar was not removed to do it and there is no exterior section of the bar that has not been polished. This tells me that who ever did it was very thorough. The records on the car are in good order and I cannot find a billing invoice to have it polished. I have always wondered if it wasn't an option to have a polished targa bar. The bottomline is I like it and maintain it with Mothers.

I'm planning on refinishing my targa bar as part of the repaint project I'm currently working on. The two options are a brushed finish and a mirror polish. I was leaning towards a brushed finish but after seeing Stephanie's car I think a mirror polish is the right amount of bling! I'm going to do polished window, door and headlight trim as well as the wheels next time I replace the rubber. hopefully it'll look as good as I think it will.

Spartocracy, I did a search for metal polishing in Oahu but came up blank. Your best bet might be the DIY route. If you can get the bar off the car that'll make it easier but it can be done on the car. Hope to see your wheels when I'm in Honolulu!

Aloooooohaaaaaa.

Remove the bar, use paint stripper and razor blade, polish with fine grade steel wool then use rubbing compound, then mothers,

You could do it while on the car but it is easier to remove the bar.

If you want the brushed stainless look just use 800 grit sand paper.

it's already brushed stainless, so I guess I would just skip the paint stripper/razor blade and just go with the steel wool, rubbing compound and mothers?

My Targa bar was black. I stripped it and used Dico buffing compounds to get close to a chrome finish, Dico is available at Ace Hardware stores. It looked nice but I ended up installing a brushed stainless bar, both look great to me really. I plan to find chrome trim at some point or refinish the black trim. Does anyone have experience having trim professionally chromed or mirror polishing black trim, including door handles?

Nice car! Good to see another Mexico Blue rod out there. It's inspirational for me as my restoration project (slowly) slogs along.

I agree with satin finish. Polished is way, way, WAY too high-maintenance. Looks nice, but unless it's a never-driven show car, I wouldn't.

Are you sure there is no clear coating on it?

Thanks Porsche-O-Phile, it is actually "Minerva Blue", I can see how it looks close to Mexico Blue in this photo.

Nope, not an option.

Stainless was standard through 78 (black an option).

You will be able to tell once you start. Or you could just put some stripper on one spot and see if it dissolves any coating.

What kind of stripper would you recommend? (this could go south, reeeal fast)
