How do I remove the alternator

the unit as a whole has been removed from the engine and I have removed the fan. Now how do I seperate the alternator from the fan housing. I have removed the 6 5 mm hex screws. The alternator will not move. I have tapped it carefully but I am afraid to either crack the housing or mess up the alternator.

I wish to clean the housing so it would be nice to remove the alternator.

The tip I got recently was to place 2 2x4's on the floor. Put the fan housing edge on one and then pick up the opposite lip/end and drop repeatedly from a few inches of height while rotating between drops. This worked on my very stubborn alternator. Be warned it took many drops before it broke free. Don't forget to protect the alternator on the floor. Ball up a towel or something and stuff underneath the alternator between the 2 pieces of wood.

Just hit the studs with a rubber or plastic mallet, while resting the housing between your knees. Make sure to catch the alternator

Ok I did a stupid thing. I removed those six studs thinking they where threaded to the fan housing and did the drop on the corner thing michaelw suggested. Doh.

Short story is I broke the d@mn brushes on the regulator. The alternator is a Paris Rhone and so is the regulator. Pelican doesn't seem to carry them any more but part number C-603-913-01 going for $97 appears to fit. D@mn last regulator I had to replace was in my 1980 MB 240D and it only cost $12 from the Mercedes Dealer this looks like a porsche tax to me

I wonder if a alternator repair shop could fix it for me by putting in new brushes.

Osidak,

Yes, you can have the brushes replaced. Take the alternator to a alternator repair shop and they should make the repairs. While it's there have them go over it and check it out. Costs will be minimal compared to buying a new one.

well the shop couldn't replace the brushes but they sold me a new one for $28.50 so I will not complain. they also tested my alternator and found everything to be good.
