What does the star by the engine number mean?

Just wondering what the star by the engine number means.

Does an "R" next to the engine number denote a fectory rebuild?

Any other symbols or letters used to indicate engine history?

Star has no meaning to my knowledge. "R" as in 911.123.7R is just part of the casting number for that part. It does not mean rebuilt. If you had a replacement case, it would have no type number or star number, just the R number.
