Question So I got the engine in the car and ran into a little problem. . .

After all the engine and tranny bolts were in and I started putting things back together I realized that I didn't pull the cables that go throgh the firewall (for the speedo & tach?) through to where they are supposed to go . I also found the wireing cable that gets plugged in teards the front of the engine is being pinched. My question is can I just loosen the engine mounts a little and drop the motor a few inches without having to loosen the tranny mounts? I just need enough room to get those thin cables through to the head of the transmission.

Thanks in advance for the help,

Michael

No, you need to put a floor jack under the transmission end to lower it enough to free the pinched plug/cable.

Do not lower by the motor mounts, it has no effect on the transmission-end.

The small wires going into the tunnel are from the speedo pick-up on the side of the transmission. Also, other small wires from the tunnel are for the reverse light contact on the end of the transmission.

And don't forget the ground strap to the body near the mount.

Thanks for the reply Gunter! If I am readiing this correctly, and please forgive me if I'm not, I just have to drop the transmission end? That would be helpful! I really wasn't looking forward to doing both ends again!

My car is an '87 so the wiring cable at the front left of the engine bay wouldn't be for a CIS but might be for the Motronic. And yes, the reverse light cable is in it's proper place and actually did remember the lower ground strap!

Take care,
Michael

Hey Jason, Thanks for the offer! The wife has me helping her with some "wifey things" this morning so I probably won't be able to get to the car until around 3pm today but you're always welcome to pop by. BTW are you a daddy yet ?

Take care,
Michael

Yep, put a floor jack under, back off the bolts and use the jack to control height.
However, you'll need to disconnect the coupler in the tunnel!!!!!!!!!!
You can only come down a couple inches before the shift-shaft hits the tunnel but, it should be enough to free the pinched cable.

Yeah, Speedo and Motronic.

MIchael,

You can put a jack under the engine and drop it enough to get the cable out. Have done it. I would also loosen the transmission bolts a coupe of turns so they are not tight when you do it. The other two wires plug into the transmission and don't go into the engine bay.
