Time to paint the SCarrera

I've had the car for a few years (see original thread Questions about a 3.2 in a SC) and it's been a great as a track car. It had a poor paint job when I bought it and 3 seasons on the track have made it worse so, I decided it is time for a new look.

To reduce the cost of a new paint job / color change, I stripped it down over the past 2 months and took her in today. It was more work than expected but that is the way most projects go!

I've always like the look of the European Club Sport and have decided on Gran Prix white, red CS graphics and red fuchs.

I have also started on the interior and will be converting the original beige to black by using SEM dye. So far I am very happy with the progress and would recomend the SEM interior dye.

Paint will take a few weeks as the guy who is doing it is doing it as a side job. When I get it back, I'll post some progress pics

Now's the time to put on some MA Shaw bumpers, get rid of the sound pads, front oil cooler, go to a lighter weight exhaust!

Yep, you have to take them off in order to remove/paint the area/replace that black rubber seal... though i've seen it painted right over on some hack jobs..

Wow, that's going to look great!

I'm not aware of any seals that can't be removed and replaced while keeping the front fenders on.

How are you applying the SEM dye? I was actually getting ready to order my leatherique for my winter porject. Any issues with coverage? Anyone else out there used the SEM before, if so, how is the durability? How many oz did you order, and is it enough?

I love the white IROC looking cars. This is one of my favorites:

Thanks

GaryR, khamul02,
I loosened the fender bolts which gave a little wiggle room allowing me the ability to remove the seal. With some lube, I should be able to get new seals in....or so I have been told by others who have done it.

V8 ranch, They call is dye but it comes in a spray can and goes on like spray paint. If you have experience using rattle cans, it's as easy as that. I did buy SEM's vinyl prep to help in the cleaning. If you can do it outside....do it, it is very very stinky. I set up a small spray booth in the basement and put a furnace filter over a large box fan to help but my wife has not been very happy with the new odor of the ENTIRE house I have used two 12oz cans at $12 each and expect I'll need 2 more. A friend restored his interior/dash with SEM 2 years ago and it looks as good today as it was when he sprayed it. I bought it at a local auto paint store.

No update on the car......I'll stop by this week and see how it's doing. I was able to get the enterior dye job done though. The flash makes it look glossy but it really is more of a satin finish similar to the factory. I still have the dash to do but it is in the car so it will have to wait.

Time to start on the exterior trim. It's in bad shape so I either need to re-chrome or go black and since the Euro CS was black, that's what I'll start today. The smaller bits will fit into me friends blast cabinet to remove the shine. Milt recomended XIM sealer/bonder and the shop I bought it from said "it will stick to anything" so I'll shoot that first and then a coat or two of SEM's trim paint.

It's meant to be 60 in Denver today

88 Club Sport,

How did you strip off the paint? My SC is in need of a new paint job.

And the re-done interior pieces look great.

Thanks,

Tom

best reason to go Club Sport is the driver's fender graphic.

Are those Club Sport fender decals available anywhere? Are the "Carrera CS" side graphics available anywhere?

Shaun,
All of the US cars (22 in '88, 7 in '89 of them) had the CS graphics on the fender....attached is my '88. The Euro cars were all (a few exceptions) GP white with red graphics....I always loved the look on the RS 2.7s and thought that a Euro CS replica sitting beside my '88 CS would be kind of cool.

carolinatrophy,

Nope, the factory does not offer the US decal and no one has been able to do so yet. I'm sure it can be done but since no one has a unmounted one to duplicate, it will be tought. Also, they were unique to the individual car. For example, mine is red and black. On the black CS's they were silver and black......the white cars were black and white etc.

The Euro CS decals are available here ..... http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_911_badges_decals.html#a3924 I have some made from a US guy and if they turn out good on the car, I'll post contact info.

Craig
