Can I drop my 901 trans without altering the engine?

It looks like I need to drop the engine in order for my transmission to come out? Is that true? I have everything disconnected on the trans. If I do have to drop the engine, can someone give me a brief procedure to do so? It's for my 912 (1967)

Thanks,
Jim

Though I have not done it, you can see that it is easier to remove the engine and transaxle as a unit. Fewer bolts and linkages to remove. You will also then be able to get to any oil leaks on the front of the engine.

Dropping them both is cake and the transmission separates from the 912 engine with only 4 bolts. unlike the 911. I think it would be impossible to drop the transmission and not the engine.
