Targa bar/cover re-paint...

Good morning, I'm in the midst of trying to remove the Targa bar cover from my '89 911 so that I can have it repainted........previous owner tried to "sand" off all of the factory black and it's not all the pretty.

I've been successful in removing the old rubber/weatherstripping seal that runs around the front part of the band (911 565 091 47) and have already ordered a replacement for later. They issue comes when I goto remove the inner lining as I understand there are (2) nuts at the base of both sides that needed to be removed before the cover will come off.

Is there anyone that's done this or perhaps a tech thread out there that can help guide me through.........??

Brian

Brian, its pretty easy, pull back all the w/stripping and find all the little screws, and the 4 nuts under the wheel well (2 on each side that will prob. break off)
i decided to paint mine to,and now i am glad i did.

Ahhhh!!!

Metal or black only - no paint!

Well, it's your car - do whatever you want. My $0.02 though.

On a soft top targa, black is prob. a better choice, I was fortunate to find a 75 with the factory hard top (one of 47 produced) and went a little custom,

Wow, that actually does look fantastic with the hardtop - didn't see that before. Very nice/rare find and beautiful overall. Love the color, too!

Dan/Phile.......thanks for the quick response.......after another 30min of searchingi finally found them......of course, removal of the Carbon Canister in the RR wheel well should be fun so that I can actually get to the nuts down below. Little dissapointed in the PET Catalog as I search high and low but couldn't find the location of those 2 nuts !

Oh, in terms of paint or not.......was actually thinking of having it actually chrome dipped or painted with a new chrome product I've seen at the race shop.....PO has a number of "swirl" marks on it that I'd like to remove, but not sure I like the stainless look against my Linen Metallic factory paint........perhaps Black is the right choice afterall

Don,

That top and bar really came out something special! Not to hijack the thread, but do you have any more photos, maybe a profile shot?

Cheers,

The trim on my car is the silver/chrome. So I went from the body color hoop to the stainless.

IMOthe best looks are as follows

black trim-black hoop

silver/chrome trim-stainless hoop

custom color trim- custom color hoop

Also, I picked up my stainless hoop for 100 dollars from a dismanter. I did that because I wasnt convinced until it went on that stainless was the way to go.

** small piece of advice **

use lots of blue tape and towels when you take the hoop off and put it on.

once you get the screws out and wiggle the hoop out it will sort of spring out and could cause some paint damage

AFTER

Stainless bar looks great. Is the front destroyed during the removal process or is there a away to save it? Also, is the rear seal/gasket an over the counter item? Thanks.

Stainless looks great with the Mocha Brown

I was thinking about the same for mine but then I would need to strip the window molding and vent window frames.

Here is a good thread about removing the Targa bar

you can remove the front and rear seals without destroying them.

my rear one was in terrible condition and havent sucked it up and bought a new one.

the seal that goes against the targa top comes off with a little gentle work and is easily reglued back into place

I re-painted mine without taking it off, if I was able to do it; anyone can do it. I sanded it, applied primer X2 coats, and 3 coats of Santin Black. Hope this helps
