Hi – Does anybody have recommendations for which oil to use in a 2.7 engine?
Thanks for the help.

I would recommend something really slippery

There are so many opinions on this subject you are insane for even asking it.. lol..

Im gonna go out on a limb here and say that most would say its not a 2.7l thing.

In general you are gonna be told that synthetic oil causes more leaks so dont use it..

I say cough cough cough bull shiot!

There is only one oil to run even if it does cause it to leak a little more.. 15w/50 Mobil 1.

It will keep your engine clean and will handle hot spots in your motor that conventional oil will not..

I have absolutely no proof of the above.. I think the dark side (non synth crowd ) recommends a kendal oil that you cant even get anymore..

At the end of the day you will be fine with any decent oil.. just run heavy weight as an air cooled motor is hot and this keeps pressures up....

Regular dino 20W50 oil for summer, add in a zinc additive if not using something like BardPenn oil.

Do you have an owner's manual?

It's listed in there, lighter oil in winter/cool weather.

15w-50 Mobil 1

has the highest temp ratings last time I compared them

our upper cylinder and pistons rings develop very high heat that carbonizes most oils

and all due respect to others

it is clear that the current Mobil 1 has dubious levels of a critical additive component, ZDDP

I have stopped using it and would advise others to avoid it also.

If you cannot get Brad Penn, then use Delo or Rotella or Valv. Racing oil

see the oil thread.

Die, thread! Die!

Yikes! Another oil thread! Please just put Brad Penn 20W-50 in the 2.7 and be done with it!

Or.. Amazon.com.

I might just run this cuz its green and looks cool.

Amazon.com: Brad Penn Oil 009-7115S 50W Racing Oil - 1 Quart: Automotive

And straight 50 is great for an old worn out air pumper.

Royal Purple is#1. I use he RP 10w40 in my '86 with a 3.6L and have used RP Racing 41. it's better tham Mobil 1. I buy a cas from Summit racing and have it delivered to the Porshe shop that services the car. It's expensive but, worth the investment.

Cruise the oil threads....

See the recommendations ....

What weight shall I run?

The most popular are:
15W-40
20W-50
15W-50

What Oils do we see regularly?

The most frequently mentioned are:
Brad Penn
SWEPCO
Mobil 1
Kendall GT
Shell Rotella
Exxon Delvac
Cheveron Delo
Castrol
Motorcycle oil
Royal Purple
Motul

How do I pick which one?

Dunno, I guess it is up to you.

How did HarryD decide?

I looked at the posts by those who tore down and inspected more engines than I ever will. I read what they said.

Who are these dudes?

I guess I will let you figure it out. After all, you may a have a beef with one or more of them and maybe your experts are not my experts.

4085 Phosphorous! That is a lot more than the others. Is that much necessary? There will be excess Phosphorous after all the Zinc is used up while the ZDDP is formed and broken down. Is that OK? I wonder if that would tend to leach metal ions from the less electronegative Magnesium and Aluminum, causing embrittlement? Although, I suppose it might form a Phosphide micro-coating in a similar way to Metal Nitrides since N and P are in the same family. Mg3P2? Or it could bring in Oxygen for a Phosphate ion Mg3(PO4)2?

One can never have enough phosphorus. How do you think those fish maintain their glow?

I need that carbon, it may be the only thing holding my engine together.

I've been using the discarded oil that they throw away behind the local McDonald's. If you pour it through a sieve to get the bigger potato pieces out of it, it seems to work fine. I figure that frying happens at a high temperature without destroying this oil so it should be good. Just remember to change it often.
