Front Jacking Point??

hello all..

I think I can hear the "Well DUUUH!"'s now, but here goes anyway.....:

Is the circled area the appropriate jack point for a floor jack to lift the front end to place axle stands under the torsion bar ends? It looks like it is and has been used previously but I wanted to be sure...

(PS Gerry if you read this, the motor is FA coming off this week.....)

W/ 1 jack don't go to max height w/ a single lift, walk it up by alternating sides.

To lift the back, jack at or just inboard of the stock lift point, place the stand u under the t bar tube near the outer end. Do the same on the other side.

Repeat to the necessary height

Interesting to note, my early cars don't have that reinforced "cube" jack point--just the seam. Does anyone know when the reinforcement started? Was it with the impact bumper cars in 74, or sometime later?

This raises the question of suitable front end support for me as well. I plan on replacing the old style 'pinch-bolt' struts & a bent A-arm. Having the front end of the car resting on (c/w wooden blocks & jack-stands) those seams is not the best of options. Any suggestions for those of us with the earlier cars?

My 80 SC is minus the "cube" as well.

I took a 4"X4"X2" and carefully traced the seem on the block and then took a router to it. The seem passes thru the groove made with the router without the weight of the car putting any pressure on it.

The block sits directly on the jack stand.





Please excuse the rust! It's all been taken care of.


Sat like that for 6 months.

Good afternoon gentlemen, I'm part of the cube-less crowd as well. The seam tracing block idea is brilliant! My only question is - where do you actually lift the car until you place the jackstand there?

I lift at the factory point right aft of the door. Using the Pelican jack pad and my floor jack.

Same here. I jack one side of the car up...place a jack stand under the rear t-bar cover (if not doing suspension work) and another under the jack pad (pictured above), then jack the other side up and repeat stand placement to get all four corners off the ground. If on a lift, you can certainly use the four Carrera "pads", but I have never placed a floor jack under the front Carrera "pads" and jacked up from there. What's the advantage, and why not do it the way it was meant to be raised?

ps: If the wheels come off the car...they go UNDER the tub as Sailchief has in his picture above. Don't trust your life on jacktands alone. Also, when jacking one side, then the other, if you're going very high, do it in more than a single step...don't want it to topple off the stands. BE SAFE!!!

YES! To everything. Tires and wheels under the tub. (Plus, they are out of the way.) Lift in stages. Also, I like a thin piece of plywood between the concrete floor and the jack stands. For whatever reason, this set-up seems more stable to me.
