"Weltmeister" decals in the '80s?
Hey Pelicans,
Everyone knows about the cool window stickers that Porsche made to commemorate world championships in the late '60s and early '70s, but I have an '85 Carrera and I think it's a little new to sport those ;-) However Rothmans Porsche were World Endurance champions in '85, anyone ever make a commemorative decal for that? Cheers, d.

I was really disappointed when Porsche discontinued the Marken Weltmeister decals. I dont think most of the newer Porsche buyers really care about "Marken Weltmeister" or decals commemorating any other victories or championships. OK dont flame me too much all you Cayenne drivers ! ![]() But come on..admit it. Most of the buyers ( and sales people) of new Porsches these days would not know a 917 from a 747. dienstuhr, since you are an air-cooled driver I am sure you would know the difference ! My hats off to you. I like your idea. (This should get something started !)

I would LOVE a Rothmans Porsche decal for the side window of my car. That's my era; I was a teenager in the mid-late '80s... and THE cool motorsports brands were Big Tobacco... Rothmans with Porsche, Honda and Williams Renault... Camel Honda, Marlboro with Ferrari, McLaren and Yamaha... Mild Seven Benetton, Lucky Strike Suzuki...
Except Martini, and that was the ULTIMATE cool ;-) Cheers d.

For my '83 SC, the best I've been able to do is put a Monte Carlo Rally grille badge on my engine lid (to honor the last Porsche to win the event in '78) and, on my rear seat deck, a Rothmans Porsche baseball cap commemorating Ickx & Bell's '82 Le Mans win and Martini Racing lanyard with a ACO Le Mans ticket holder & period tickets & paddock pases stuffed into it. From the Martini-sponsored East African Safari in '78 to the Rothmans-sponsored 954 SC/RS in '84, these seemed like appropriate commemorative gestures for my SC. eBay is your friend to help you track down cool period stuff for your '85, too.
I'd be up for a group design & buy for a 956-era Porsche Marken Weltmeister sticker. Of course, the FIA changed the names of some of the championships awarded (something along the lines of "Championship of Makes" to "Manufacturers Championship" in '82 to "Teams Championship" in '85), so a sticker with German text, whether "Marken Weltmeister" or whatever, ought to be accurate. For example, a SC with a "Marken Weltmeister 78-81" would be accurate, although Porsche continued winning makes trophies, regardless of title, for several years afterwards until the Silk Cuts came on the scene and finally stopped breaking like typical Jaguars. Of course, if such titling nuances are disregarded, we could just make a "Porsche Marken Weltmeister 78-86" globe sticker similar to those that preceded it. It would cover any SC owners who wanted one as well as those 3.2s with 915 transaxles.

Sure, there are Rothmans Porsche stickers on eBay all the time ... ones that are fine for a toolbox. That's where I put one! But an inside window version, and one at that that doesn't look cheap? Not so much....

I have the 69,70,71 sticker on the Targa window of my silver 78.
It looks Great, BTW. I saw one on a beautiful silver 72 Targa, and I said, ''Why not ?''. |

Can anyone tell me about this decal , it came on 80 SC that I just got a few weeks ago.
It had belonged to a German guy. had the EU sticker on the other side of the windshield. And a big D for Deutschland on the back. But the Grossglockner one really intrigues me? Thanks Richard

That was the old Porsche "test track" for new cars in the pre-war days. It was a high pass and long descent in the Alps with many switchbacks to test brakes, steering, chassis, everything. I believe it was also a way to get to the Porsche home att Zell am Zee (Oesterreich). The first Gmund 356s were tested there.
I think there was also a hillclimb race there which von Frankenburg won in an early 356. I will have to review my Excellence was Expected (by Ludvigson).
