Anyone else like the sugar scoops?

I know the "proper" headlight look is the euro h4 and to upgrade to those but I installed the h4s and stuck with the sugar scoops. Much brighter but I think depending on the car they look fine. Elongates the fender too.
Am I alone?

Craig_D 05-03-2010 11:45 PM

I like my two scoops! ;)

Not bad, but in general I much prefer the look of the Euro-spec cars. Mine is being converted to this look. The US spec cars always seem to get the afterthoughts - big, ugly, chunky bumpers, boring taillights, no fog lights in the rear, etc. The sugar scoops aren't terrible looking but they look forced, IMHO.

Geronimo '74 05-04-2010 01:44 AM

European lights are sooo much nicer IMO.

No, they can look quite sharp on the right car. I had a set of chrome scoops on my first 911 and they looked fabulous. Classy with a period richness that implies quality.

tobluforu 05-04-2010 04:12 AM

I still have the scoops on my 72 and love them. I drive the car at night maybe once a year so the H4's are not needed. I also think they add detail and character to the car, but I do like the H4's as well.

My humble opinion

I have the original sugar scoops on my '74, but I'm looking forward to converting them to the Euro look H4's...

Playa76911S 05-04-2010 06:45 AM

OK, I'll be the first to say it...I HATE them! They remind me of a chameleon's eyes. Also, seeing them always reminds me of our stupid DOT that panders to the auto insurance industry (standardized cheapo sealed beams) over safety (100 times better lighting from H4s).

Whenever I see a gorgeous '86 or older 911 that still has the scoops I cringe and want to yell at them "spend the $400 for some real headlights!!!"

Will anyone admit to choosing the scoops over H4s if given the choice to switch for free?

You give me the H4's with the rings painted the same color as my car and I will make the jump. That doesn't mean I like them better, but they are better lights for sure and I'm all about upgrading.

78SCRSMAN 05-04-2010 07:07 AM

IMO I think the reason people go with the Euro H4's is because they were designed for the European market. Had it been the other way around, most would go with the scoops. I chose scoops for my car but then I never do what people tell me to do... except my wife. :D

KCTarga3.2 05-04-2010 07:15 AM

H4's are the way to go, I couldn't wait to get the sugar scoops off of my car. Here is a side by side comparison (before the rings had been painted red)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1272982458.jpg

Winter 05-04-2010 07:16 AM

If you like the look, then keep it. There are so many different configurations and looks that can be achieved with these cars, who cares what others think. Your car should be an extension of what you like about Porsche, not what everyone thinks is "cool" or looks "best". I'm always amazed at how some folks here slag on Targas. They really HATE them. Who cares? If you don't like Targas then drive a coupe. If you don't like sugar scoops, then don't run them on your car. Some like blondes, some like brunettes. I appreciate them both!

DUK 05-04-2010 08:57 AM

I like the look of the scoops far more. And I'm using Silver-star bulbs and they are as bright as the H4's in a side by side comparison.

GH85Carrera 05-04-2010 12:13 PM

Another vote for the scoops. It is all about preference, and that is my preference.

RWebb 05-04-2010 12:17 PM

HATE HATE HATE

please do not force other people to look at your scoopy car, especially the elderly who may suffer hear attacks

other than, they're fine!

tobluforu 05-04-2010 01:04 PM

Don't "HATE" on the scoops!

oregonmon 05-04-2010 01:42 PM

I think I hear a SSWDP movement starting.
Muhahahaha! :P

I put the H4s on my car with the scoops. Didn't want to spend the extra $400 or so, plus painting to match. I drive in LA so they are way better than the US sealed beams that came with it.

Bob Goding 05-04-2010 04:20 PM

Think I read on this very forum a few years back, something about the Circumcised/Un-circumcised look.

Yep, that's what I did. Huge improvement.

The 911 was designed with the European headlights, see image below.

The ugly lights were only made for the US so these useless sealed beams can be put in. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif

On the other hand it is good that not all have the same taste. What is ugly for one is beautiful for others.

Cheers

schoward 05-04-2010 06:33 PM

I can't say I'm in love with the scoops on my SC - but i say hey - that's what it came with, why mess with something that isnt broke and that doesnt bother me?

I had original sealed beams which never gave me an issue in terms of brightness. One burnt out and i just put in a set of Sylvania silver stars for $40. Nice improvement, but whatever - they work and thats what came with the car.

The scoops do the job for me - but that's just me. I do appreciate the look of the H4s (esp with body color rings) but feel they would make my US spec SC look molested. No relays, no melted HL switch. Aint broke, I aint fixin it.

pwd72s 05-04-2010 06:40 PM

Actually, there can't be all that much difference between well designed 7" round H-4 bulbed lights with sugar scoops and the euro look H-4's...both use the same bulbs. So, completely an owner choice as far as I'm concerned.

H-1's of course, are a different story...they are better than H-4.

I found the HID conversion pictured above interesting..didn't know they were available in 7" round sizes. If they're anything like the factory HID lights in my Mustang, they are fabulous!

craig356 05-04-2010 06:59 PM

Scoops........

2 Scoops for me please.....

Certainly a personal preference which is what makes the world go around. I like the scoops on my car, particularly due to the meteor grey metallic color...On a Euro car, Euro lights look more appropriate to complete the package.

What's funny here? In this pic, you're looking at 7" round lights behind a glass cover. You're right about the DOT, tho...they forbid glass covers over the lights, claiming it was a safety issue. The Jag XKE suffered more than the 911 looks wise when the DOT did this...

oregonmon 05-04-2010 07:33 PM

Good to hear I'm not alone.

Hugh R 05-04-2010 08:08 PM

I bought the H-4s from Wayne about a year ago. IIRC $130 or so total housing and bulbs. Hard to beat. The Euro H-4s from Wayne are $256 IIRC each, plus painting the rings if you so choose.

Oh, now I understand, the scoops were NOT designed by anyone at Porsche??? OK.

As I've said before, if this forum has proven anything, it's that there are as many "looks" to a P-car as there are different owners who tweak the looks of their cars to what they like (not only "look", mind you, but power plant as well). You may prefer a blond to a brunette. Or maybe redheads really rock your world. I like 'em all (even though I'm married to a blond).

Hey, just because I'm on a diet doesn't mean I can't look at the menu!:D

Actually, I think those are early H1 lenses and not clear covers over sealed beams. If you squint your eyes just right, you can see what I mean; the fluting is visible in the glass.

Here is a shot of Chris Nielsen's very nice SWB with H1s. I think you will see the similarities.

The scoops were designed at Porsche...after the DOT regs of the time specified only sealed beam lights without glass covers for cars brought into the USA. Before that specification, the lights on early Porsches were covered with glass, much the same as VW.

pwd72s 05-04-2010 11:12 PM

A pic of original H-1's, bought and installed in the mid 70's...note the tops of the lenses in contrast to the grey car pictured above. Clear lens tops originally, vs. the fluted tops on the gray car. The fog light is USA equipment..installed at the factory.

The green (1965-'66?) car? Can't tell...but all that made it to the USA then had sealed beams 7" round behind the glass cover. Many of us quickly converted to various 7" round "Quartz Iodine" over the sealed beams. Marchall (sp?) brand was the most popular, IIRC.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1273039959.jpg

The above car originally entered the USA with sugar scoops & sealed beams. Evren has all the original sugar scoop bits & pieces should he ever wish to convert back.

What disturbs me is that many are being misguided about what is original and what isn't. Mods are fine, so is originality. Whatever floats your boat. But it would be wise to know the difference, and there is misinformation.

trak ratt 05-05-2010 04:36 AM

Switched from H1s to SS on my mostly track SC. Lens for H4s and H1 are too expensive to be changing every time someone kicks up a stone on the track! Final straw was when I damaged both H1s in a track incident 2 years ago.
