Tires for 16 x 7 & 16 x 8
I am looking for the best tire for a 911 SC that is a Sunday only hot rod for the street. They need to be street legal but as much race track as possible. I have the 7s up front and the 8s in back. Suggested manufacturer, type and size is greatly appreciated!
Thanks! Lindy |

I've tried going wider but have settled on the stock sizes (205x55 and 225x50) with, apparently, similar performance.
Currently running (and have been satisfied with) Kumho Ecsta's but am seriously considering the new Dunlop Direzza. Jerry M '78 SC |

jmohn uses most conventional sizes. 245 for a 8J is too wide IMO.

Like Geronimo'74 said, the "Search" Button is your friend. There are lots of threads regarding tires.
I have been running Dunlop Direzza Star Specs, in OEM sizes. They wear fairly fast. They are also predictable & stable in the wet(not downpour). I bought them for summer dry fun! I will buy another set when these are done. Oh, one drawback to Dunlop's. These tires are like a Hoover vacuum cleaner. They are soo sticky that they will suck up any screw or nail within twenty feet of them - just kidding of course. Richard |

Just did my first DE with Dunlop Direzza Star Specs last weekend. Love these tires. Stock sizes 205x55x16 and 225x50x16 on a 911SC.

Tire sizes
I run the Falken 205-50s on 7" Fuchs (front) and 245-40s on 8" Fuchs (rear) on my '80 SC coupe. The handling is much better with the 245s on the rear compared to 225s. I also have Bilstein sport shocks which virtually eliminate body roll. I have never tracked the car, but I believe that it would do well.

Thanks for the input. I did the search thing but wanted to make sure of the latest and greatest. I know tires change like the weather so if something better came out this month I'd like to know about it.

Street use only. Wear=20K miles on the rears, 35K miles on the fronts. Good luck, Gerry

There are some SCCA national champion pro testers/engineers, in our region, including those from Toyo and Bridgestone, and the recommended tire at the time last year was for street stock class (threadwear rating >140) was the Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec. We were able to pull 1.2g's lateral on my 3.2 according to Dynolicous and an Iphone, and there's a 993 in a current issue of European car that recorded 1.3g's

The perfect tire for you is the Toyo RA-1. 205-55-16 and 225-50-16. I've used these for the past two years for both street and track. As long as you don't expect them to go 50K miles they are fantastic.
Only one problem they may be NLA. I just got a set of Kuhmo V710s in 225-50-16 and 245-45-16. The 245 Kuhmos are the same size as the 225 Toyos, so they just fit. The 225 Kuhmos are a little wide for the 7s on the front of my car, but no rubbing with my rolled fenders and -2 deg camber. These V710s are like real race tires, nice and sticky, but you may not want to use these much on the street, since they don't have much tread.
