74 Carrera Resto ?
I was just looking through an issue if Sports and Exotic Car magazine and they were featuring a mild restoration of a 74 Carrera. I noticed the front valance didn't have a rubber front spoiler/lip but it did have a ducktail, which apparently was standard, or so they say in the article.
I recall reading something about the instability of having a rear spoiler without a front spoiler. Or, it was OK to have a front one and not a back one but not have a back one without a front one. Did Porsche make the 74 Carrera without a front spoiler but WITH a ducktail? (and I looked to see if there were holes for a front lip that may have been removed, if there ever was one on the car it was removed and the holes filled.)

I have seen a few and know where one is at the moment. I don't remember anything different about the front. They came with rear flares and an optional duck tail. They were lower in front, AFAIK. 2.7 MFI motors.
Edit:I'll stand corrected per the post below. Last edited by milt; 05-02-2010 at 03:05 PM.. |

Every 74 Carrera I've seen has the black front spoiler lip (as opposed to the RS type spoiler integrated into the valence).

I think this answers your question... here is a brochure from 1974 with a pic - NO lip ...

JB,
Your tag says "I'm here to cause trouble" and you are!!! That photo from the brochure shows Porsche is defying Pelican logic! ![]()

I have a '74 Carrera (since new) and it was delivered without any front lip spoiler (those came along in '75) and with the ducktail.
Many people add the '75 Carrera lip spoiler to reduce understeer.

Regardless of authenticity issues, I'd absolutely think you'd want the front rubber air dam, especially with a ducktail (spoilered) car. The last thing you want is the front end starting to float more than it already will with a tail-heavy car with more downforce. Get that air out from under the front end and it'll help with the high-speed handling, almost a guarantee.
(Incidentally my '74 Carrera Targa project has both the ducktail and the rubber air dam).

That car is my fathers (I am the one standing where the engine should be) The car did not have the rubber lip spoiler up front, and I believe the 74 Carreras did not come with one from the factory. They started using the front rubber lip when the introduced the larger whale tail. Here is another 74 Carrera and it does not have the front rubber lip spoiler.

How cool is that?! Man, I love this site!
![]() I was inquiring because I kinda want to take my 83 back as far as I can without going waaayyy back. I don't like the rubber lip but I love ducktails. I've been trying to find a way to get the "look" of an older car without compromising aero. I bought a valance the I plan to start tinkering with this summer in an attemp to create a mix of old and new. |

I have no front spoiler but have a ducktail on my '83 SC. I have yet to notice any lightness in the front end at speed (<120mph). Stock suspension with Bilsteins.

kiwioke,
I LOVE your car!!! If it's good enough for you its good enough for me. And I don't do 120mph very often thats for sure. Maybe I'll plig the side holes with those plastic plugs until I figure out what I like better. I'm still gonna see what I can come up with on the extra valance though. I really like what ghost1001 did with his (merging it with the bumper).

Thanks, Mickey356, you are too kind. Here is a gratuitous pic from its first DE outing today.

My '74 Carrera Targa has both the duck tail and rubber lip. I have pictures somewhere of the original owner with the car and it has the rubber lip on it. The pictures have hand written dates on them from December 1974 so I believe this was the factory setup.

Wow, six years ago already. I entered my 74 Targa in that event, 40,000 original miles, original paint and interior I still didn't stand a chance, finished way down the list but what fun.
