Any way to update the BBS wheel look?

1980's BBS wheels are high quality, but in my eyes look fairly dated. Has anyone tried any subtle changes to improve the look?

Anyone painted the center section a different color (other than black)? Charcoal? Metallic? Polished?

Anyone remove the large BBS center cap and replaced with something else? For example, remove it so the lug nuts are visible, and place a porsche center crest on the wheel?

Seems many of these wheels are missing the large bbs sentercaps, either due to the fact that they were lost or removed to track the car and never put back on...

Anyone replaced them with something else?

Just brainstorming...

can't help you there, but i remember when i worked at the dealer in the late 70s and people would replace the fuchs with those ugly bbs wheels and i would buy the fuchs take-offs from the parts dept for $10 each. those were the days.

I use these BBS for Street wheels and Fuchs 951 8's x 9's for the track. I need the extra clearance for the 993 brakes.

Mine are silver painted....but I still think they are fugly. I feel like I should be carrying around a brick phone with these wheels. But some people actually like them.

You can update the BBS RS like ShakinJoe's to 17" from 16". My last quote was about $750 for 2 wheels going to 17x9. I'm currently building a 16x8/9 set and repainted them Silver w/Clear and polished lips. I like them personally.

Dated or not the best wheels ever IMO. :D

Note how all the good looking wheels in those pictures DON'T have gold centers? :D

Mine are gold and they are indeed fugly just like Joe said. I also have my centercaps removed and I think it improves the look of the gold MC Hammer wheels. But they're still ugly IMO.

That being said, next to the Fuchs these are some of the best wheels for the pre-89 911s in terms of lightweight, strong and reasonable cost. I scored my set of 16x8/9 for the cost of a pair of 16x8 Fuchs. Plus if 17 in. wheels are your desire, you can have Jae Lee at Mirage Intl or Jeff Alton set you up with some rim halves to convert your wheels. These wheels present a lot of options in terms of fitment.

Funny, I thought they were dated too, but the younger guys seem to love em..maybe its a retro thing? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1273615999.jpg

I only like the look when the center caps are off, gold never worked for me either.

i always liked the looks but like many others the gold was played out even before crocket and tubbs were off the air. they are very similar to a lot of "street racer" styles available today.

I feel that BBS RS's are a timeless wheel. I currently have 16x7&9's which I run with no centercaps or lug covers. I think the silver faces look a little more modern than the gold. I get complements on the wheels all the time from VW drivers :)

BBS RS/RM wheels are far from being ricey IMO. Lots of import guys want to use them, but it's because they looked so good on euro cars. Think 80-90s VW/ Mercedes/ BMW/ Audi, all used these wheels and looked great.

I know why you get compliments from VW drivers. Here is my factory BBS wheel GTI (about 8 years ago):

I like my BBS Motor Sports. You can pick up a mounted 17x11 with two fingers.

I had Al Reed redo mine

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1115933418.jpg

my 16 x 8 fronts were 16.4 lbs - 17.2 lbs on the 16 x 9 rears

Most don't realize that the BBS wheels back in the day were THE upgrade. Toss those nasty fuchs and get some BBS baby!

My '78 Targa has BBS-RS, as does the '79 Targa I gave to a friend, my '01 911/996 C4 has BBS-RS "look-a-like" 3-piece racing wheels. I have a set of BBS-RS for my '88 Carrera special edition but haven't yet decided to mount them or not. May disassemble them first and paint the center piece Diamond Blue to match the car.

'01 C4 BBSes have center caps that simulate the "knock-off" look.

No Porsche should be caught on the street without BBS-RSes.

KTL 05-12-2010 07:02 AM

Those are the 1 pc. BBS wheels. Also very good wheels
