Paint Guys - What the heck did I do wrong here?

I'm finally to the point where I'm priming my bumpers & hood. I pull out my brand new Fuji Mini-mite 3 (which by the way, laid down two absolutely perfect coats of primer in the hands of a complete novice.)

I sprayed two coats of epoxy primer, emptied the gun, and IMMEDIATELY dumped paint thinner in the cup, and applied it to the other pieces that had wet primer on it.

It was as if the thinner immediately catalyzed the primer and now I have a serious mess on my hands. Here's a pic.



Guess you have to learn some things the hard way

One of my old guns looks like that, it's a Sharp. Here's what I do per the instructions.

Pour about 1/4 full of Laquer thinner, unscrew the nozzle a few turns, put a rag over the whole nozzle assembly, shake and then pull the trigger. It works thru the gun and comes right back into the cup.......I then tighten the nozzle and spray until clear thinner comes out.......G'luck......

Use "Lacquer" thinner not "Paint" thinner. Common newbie mistake due to the name.

Yep, that or one of the other cleaning products that are branded the same as the epoxy. I use one of the PPG solvents (can't remember the #), very similar to lacquer thinner but seems to eat the residue up a bit better.

Can you confirm that you actually didnt use laquer thinner? FYI- it's cheap just get off brand nason or something.

Thanks Guys, I used a thinner made from mineral spirits.

I picked up some lacquer thinner, and after some soaking & cleaning, my gun looks new again! Looks like I'm back in business.

All in all a very good first day of painting

Very good. Mineral Spirits is great for a parts cleaner, not so good (as you found out) interacting with paints..
