Potenza RE960AS Pole Position - ?
A buddy of mine has offered two almost new of these Potenza's for the front of my 1984 Targa. All I would have to do is buy the rears.
Are these tires decent? When I used to go to the track, I ran Toyo Proxes RA-1s. But now I just do a bunch of aggressive street driving, and the cheap Dunlops I now use have way too much sidewall flex. I can feel the steering wheel moving far too much whenever I apex. Any thoughts? I know there is another tire thread down below, but did not want to hijack. Thanks.

I have a set for winter tire use, though I still have them on the car right now (pretty wet out here still). For an all season tire, I think they work really well. They certainly can't match the performance of a summer tire in warm and dry conditions, but I needed something that would work below 40 F... my BFGs were sliding all over the place when it was cold outside.
I think they are a good tire for the money, and I would buy them again. What dunlops do you have?

Like Graham, I first got a set as a "winter tire". It rains a lot around here in what passes for "winter". I have wound up keeping them on the car all year. As a matter of fact, I just bought my second set, which I cannot say about any other street tire I have used. I used to be rather notorious around here for going through them, and therefor having the "opportunity" to try a bunch of different tires, at a phenomenal rate. Funny, too, in that I got my first set the same way - a buddy gave me a darn near brand new pair, so all I had to do was buy a pair for the other end of the car.
On another note, with getting to "preachy" on you, I have found these are all I need for "aggressive street driving". Another thing I'm notorious for... Anyway, if you are approaching the limits of these on the street, um... let's just say I'm damn glad to see you are all the way accross the country from me. These are certainly no RA1's, AO48's, or anything even approaching that, so don't expect that kind of grip from them. But, then again, if you really feel you "need" that kind of grip, it belongs on the track. Just my ever humble opinion...

Thanks Graham and Jeff. I am sold.
And Jeff, just for the sermon, I will be driving out to WA State to do smokey burnouts and donuts on your street. Just kidding. Thanks so much for the input, guys.

I run 'em year round...they do well for what I need. Although that rear end will wear through 'em fairly quickly.
Best, Doyle

I had them before I bought my current P Zero Nero M&S. They were better in the wet. My Pirelli's are stickier in the dry. I would be afraid to drive agressive with a wet ground in the Pirelli's. I would not hesitate to buy another set of Potenza's. They were all around an excellent tire...

Have had them on our 993 for over 2 years. They look good and do well for year around general street driving and in the rain. They are very quiet but soft tires. I don't think I would consider taking them to the track.

My wife has them on her BMW, excellent tire. I use the Potenza 050RE on my 84 and I'm very happy with them.
