Post Ignition lock problems

Yesterday when I went to start the P-car to go home from work the lock that doesn?t allow you to hit the starter twice with out turning off the key first wouldn't allow me to get to the start position with the key. Also I noticed that the steering wheel wasn't locked (could turn it all the way around with out key in ignition). I started to remove the lock assembly from behind the dash (not fun at all) last night after I drove home by removing the switch from the lock cylinder and working it with a phillips screwdriver. Are their any pointers for removing this assembly and how to go about fixing it, or am I barking up the wrong tree?
