'89 911 Consenser Blower Inop

After taking my '89 911 to have the ac recharged I was told by the mechanic that my condenser blower needed replacement. $320.00 later, I left with the part, installed it, but after starting the car up and cranking the ac, the new fan isn't operating. I even pulled it out to visually verify any movement. Any suggestions? Is it supposed to always run?

New to the forum and thank you in advance.

Ahdrvr, first we need some pics of your car. I suggest you search the keyword "condenser blower motor" and you will find a lot of good info, especially a thread from Woodyhfd back on August.

It is supposed to run when the ac is on. Mine will run with the engine off and the key in the on position, if the ac switch is on.

I would check for current at the fan connections. If you have current there you may have a bad fan.

Also check your relays. IIRC the one in the smugglers box controls the front condensor fan.

Thank you to everyone for the great information. I'll check the fuses and the relay. I talked to the mechanic and he stated that the fan was disconnected when he initially checked it and the motor sparked when he attached the connection. Could have blown a fuse right there. Unfortunately, had to go out of town and won't be able to troubleshoot until Friday.

Does anyone know if there is a specific fuse just for the blower fan? All of the other AC fans are operating without any problem.

Awesome forum guys. I'll try to take some pics of the car when I get home on Friday.

Not so sure you needed a replacement condenser fan motor.

Check your existing fan motor for shorted windings.

Then, as per the previous posts, replace the relay
as per the attached jpeg.

Also, if you do not have a fuse at the motor, you should
add one.

You may pm me.

Good luck,

Gerry

On the 89 model year I think the blower fan has an inline fuse.

Bentley must have missed it.

I added one to our '86.

Same here. Unfortunately after I burned up the motor. Not 100% sure but I think Porsche added the inline fuse in 87. Same as with the footwell blowers.

Open the front trunk, look down toward the battery on the your right (LH side of car when you sit in it). The fan housing is located adjacent to the battery on the left. Locate the electrical plug to it. Unplug it, take the end to the fan housing, apply 12 volts to its terminals off your battery, using a battery charger jump each terminal (ground and hot wire) or run a set of wires from your battery to the terminals (does not matter which for the moment as the motor will run forward or in reverse). If the motor does not spin check for current on the mating connector (reference schematic noted above if you wish) with the ign key on, evap fan speed switch on, thermostat to max cold. If no current check for a later fuse mentioned, or the relay.

Barrpete,

I got the blower fuse, but missed these two fuses.

My weekend project.

Thanks,

Gerry

I might be getting old with my memory but didn't Porsche offer a factory fix for this because of fires? It included the wiring and correct fuses...?

Maybe I am just tired - my 84 now has no HVAC so I took that all out long ago but thought there was a fix from Porsche TSB style...

Somewhere, maybe. Its like the circuit they show (reference the schematic above, page 1 of 2) that suggests there is a pressure switch in the system between the thermostat and the compressor clutch. I know its not there but its always entertaining to look for it just in case.

There was. IIRC it cost around $30 or so and consisted of an inline fuse between 2 connectors that you simply plugged into the existing fan harness. Or you could build your own for about $5.

They did, because of fires, but I never heard about it, and added the fuse on my own.

What triggers the A/C condenser blower motor to start? The condenser motor on my Carrera 3,2 -89 doesn't start but when I connect a battery directly to the motor it runs but not when I turn the A/C on inside the car.
