Front hub/Bearing opinions

So I'm replacing the front right wheel bearings.
I have the old ones out & I notice on the outer hub that there is a build up of metal where it should sit flush (just in one part).
I'm thinking that when it was last done it went it crooked and scraped some ally from the side.
It is a quite solid lump. Should I just clean it up? The majority of the surface is square & should seat ok.
thanks,
see photos.

Yeap, mine was like that when I put mine in. Apparently PO did not heat the hub to expand it before pressing in the new bearings, my 2 cents.

Question, beside economics is there a reason you are not replacing both at once?

If that was my hub, I'd probably replace it with a good used one. It's almost like the race was not pressed in and the guy drove it like that until the race spun. Someone would have to be really ham-fisted to do that damage, but it probably could be done.

I'd check the spindles for wear too. Mic the right side against the left side, and against the new bearing race.

When you have the new race pressed in, check to make sure that they just don't fall in.

Looks to me like the person that put these in the last time first dipped them in the dirt before using a sledge hammer to install them.I would find a good used set. I had one like that once. On a sunny day last year I seen a guy drop a piston he was installing in a 396 Chevy motor wipe it on his pant leg once and install it. Not on the garage floor, in the dirt drive way. So it will happen.NO I did not say anything just walked off. After he returned the ring compressor I just chucked it in the trash.

You are supposed to heat the hub to both remove and install the bearings. That looks pretty rough to me, but you might be able to salvage it.

If you mean both sides of the car, it's cos the other side has no play or noise.
If you mean both bearings on one side, I am !

Obviously the worst looking part is where the cap goes on! Which is of course not a prob.

It's a 33 year old car, so who knows when or how they were put in.

Heck, change all four! I think you will be fine and know one (mechanics) heats them up to remove or replace them, just a BFH and a brass punch.

If you do it right they do fall in. You heat the hub in the oven and keep the races in the freezer. If the races are nice and cold they will fall to the seat. One second later the surface of the race heats and it is firmly in there.

There is no way you will get the race to seat properly with the material in the hub moved like that. Replace the hub.

You must heat the hub to 150C so it expands enough to install the race. Wear foundry gloves and be careful, 150C will give you second degree burns.
