Smuggler box

86 Carrera Coupe. I tried the search but not sure of what I am reading really. What exactly is in teh smugglers box of my car. The car has AC but I am in the process of deleteing it so from what I can tell there is something in there I can remove, but what else is in there. Thanks

compartment right in front of your gas tank next to the master cylinder.Contains a/c evaporator and expansion valve and cabin blower motor. Everything in there comes out for the a/c delete....great place to put your battery

What Chuckr said. You will see the black plastic cover over the blower motor and the other parts are down inside the box--easily seen once the plastic cover is removed.

It's actually BEHIND the gas tank, in front of the firewall.

On the R side of the car, opposite the master cylinder side.

Lift the lid...

It WAS originally designed for the battery by Porsche, until they discovered that they needed more weight farther forward.

It was used originally to house the optional Webasto gasoline powered heater.

The AC blower is separate from your fresh air blower. The AC blows out of the big vents in the face of the dash. The fresh air comes out on the windshield, and under the dash at your feet. The fresh air and heat basically share outlets, while the AC has it's own. Some people remove all of the AC except for the evaporator box and blower, basically turns it into a second fresh air blower. If you do remove the AC parts in the smuggler's box, note that there is some stuff in the passenger footwell that needs to be disconnected before everything will come out.

You can actually leave it in, and use the blower for the center and side vents, although it won't be cold air.

If you remove it, nothing will come out of the center or the side vents.

Also, a little extra weight in the front of the car is not as bad as in the rear.
