2.7 engine (studs pulling out?)
I have purchased a '74 911 2.7 engine with MFI. I was looking in FAQ and found a writeup telling that the studs are famous for pulling due to shrinking when hot. I also read that the '74 might have been an exception. When I get it home, do I need to replace the studs and install heli-coils as stated in FAQ. What about the MFI, is it a good system? This is my first Porsche. I bought a '71 911T body and installing the '74 engine. Thanks, John HELP!

IMO this is one of the best motors. The MFI allows a good overlap on the cam, therefore excellent power and lots of revs. Your engine originally produced 210 BHP and reved to 7,300 RPM.
I have the same basic motor in my car, with Mahle 2.8 litre barrels and pistons, 10.5 CR and it produces 240 BHP. But yes I have had one broken barrel stud and had to helicoil (timesert?) another. These engine fetch big money over here in Europe, about twice the price of the later CIS injection motors. |

your chances are better with a 74 for the studs to be ok. pull the valve covers and see if they all torque up to 23#. a 74 with MFI is unusual, in the US anyway. is it not CIS?

If it is what you say, what are the engine 'type code' and serial number to the right of the fan housing? The type code is of the form '911/xx' and serial number is of the form-- *6xx0123*
Many people confuse the CIS and MFI fuel injection systems ... is the air filter flat & rectangular, or cylindrical? The tuned exhaust system of the '74 models meant that the engine did not suffer the thermal stesses of the later 2.7 engines and did not have a serious problem with pulled studs, but it is mandatory to install an external front oil cooler!

As previously stated a 74' 2.7 MFI would be less prone to pull studs than a later 2.7 CIS with thermal reactors. Also I believe they may run a little richer than the CIS which should also help keep the temperature down. Other things that should help would be the 11 blade fan which it should already have if it started life as a 74' 2.7 MFI.
Also trimming the inner air deflector plates as suggested by Bruce Anderson to more evenly distribute air over the cylinders. Excessive heat is like high blood pressure for motors. Bobby |
