Not so suspected broken head studs (W/Pic)
Well.....this is a follow-up to my post "Broken head stud suspected". !) http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/vb/showthread.php?threadid=54625&goto=newpost The verdict is in, 3 broken studs, 2 on the same cylinder! All on the same bank (passenger side) Damn it! Oh well. Anyway I attached an image of the studs. I think it is rather unusual that they all broke at about the same length. I really wonder how much this has to do with corrosion. It appears they broke just about where the cylinder and head meet. Anyway, I am looking to have either all the studs replaced, doing a top end, or a total rebuild. Lack of a garage at my home means this is getting sent to a wrench. Could anybody give me an idea of how much my three options should cost (Chicago aera)? (Yet to get any call backs from the shops I have called for estimates. Not encouraging. Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks.

the unpainted dilivar studs break in one of two places. where they are exposed to the elements between the head and cylinder and at the bottom of the cylinder by the case. just the bottom row are dilivars. most folks just use steel studs like the top row. a stud job goes for about $1800, a valve grind about $3000, (add $500 for rings, rod bearings and rod bolts), and a quality complete rebuild is around $8000. fun toys though.

John - Thanks for your reply. I have heard people say good things about you and your shop several times on this BB. I think I recall you saying that you can except shipped engines on one of the post I read. My only prob is getting the engine out without a garage and being winter here in Chicago it doesn't sound like fun. But I should have the $ in a month or two (Christmas was purely designed to eat into my Pcar budget!) Would you happen to know of a shop in the Chicago area that would take the engine out and hold the car until I get the engine back from you and then put it in? (Pipe dream?) I swear the shops around here must be flooded with work. It's like pulling teeth just to get them to call you back. Your price sounds reasonable. Does this go down since you don't have to pull the engine? Am I a cheap bastard
? If I had the space to do it I would do it myself. I think in some weird way I would look forward to the experience. That or burn it. The engine is in good shape despite the studs. Burns about 1 quart every 1000-1500 miles and no leaks. It had a top end job done about 20,000 miles ago. I really wish they took the time to change the damn studs! OK....I'm done.
