So, a bit of a twist to this thread.... My 67 was 'Miami Viced' in the 80's to make it look like an 80's 911 by the previous owner (it already had the wide steel fenders from even earlier modifications). After I purchased the car from him, we backdated it to an ST/RSR look.

From my research you will need a cooler on each side, probably one of them with a fan, but can get away without a center cooler. I'm sure the 3.6 experts will jump in here.

I love that car in the pic, as I recall the guy who backdated it had to sell it, but anyway its beautiful and an inspiration.

TRE Cup 12-11-2015 03:09 PM

JTO had us (TRE and Axiom Motorsports partnership) back date the black car. He was very patient with us as the detail work went a lot further than anticipated. It already had a 3.6 drive train in it when it came to us. We installed a 50 row setrab cooler in each fender to keep it cool. A single center cooler that is sized for a 73 RSR or RSR is not enough, especially with a/c !.
It was a shame circumstances did not allow him to keep it, since subsequent owners have enjoyed it a LOT.

Dpmulvan 12-12-2015 07:22 AM

Awesome cars !!

Right on. Mine currently has a stock fender cooler and a center front. I'm planning to put in a second fender cooler and ditch the center radiator. I'm hoping it'll be enough with some fans. Do you remember what year this car is? I'm still trying to figure out if it's possible to get my '95 motor forward and down an inch or so.

Bummer to hear it was a forced sale. That'd be the last one I'd sell...

Here is a 77S that has been backdated, RS Flares and a 3.2 liter Carrera engine from 1986. Grand Prix White, Black lightweight sport interior. 75000 miles.

PZSPEED 12-13-2015 11:43 AM

Just wondering if rocker sill trim/extension deletion is a preferred look or are they that hard to find? My 76 is missing them and the more I see cars without them, the more I like the way it looks.

Tremelune 12-13-2015 12:59 PM

They look good with the impact bumpers, not with backdate bumpers. Impact bumpers look good with rocker trim, bad without.

PZSPEED 12-13-2015 01:59 PM

I'm noticing that now that you pointed that out..

Sorry i am probably the the odd one out here, but i dont like any 911 with those
front squared off grill look, realize it probably has a function, but in my opinion
looks like a bad mini rolls or something,.Thanks for the photos there are some fantastic examples there.

Looks great tell us more about it and post some more pics please. Where did you get those flares? The fronts have a really nice smooth ST-like shape and the rears do too although they look wider than an ST.

My 81, actually I sold it a few months ago so not mine anymore. But I'm building another....

Someone asked what the biggest surprises and pitfalls were when backdating. I'd like to hear more on that to anyone who has completed one. I guess it has a lot to do with your intended finished project.

M491 I admire:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1471162009.jpg

Elombard 02-22-2017 01:19 PM

I think the biggest surprises for me to learn were:

- Implications of the front latch panel being so different
- The cost and number of parts required for the front TS housings/lenses/grills
- The visual impact that backdating the mirrors and polished window trim have - easy to dismiss as not necessary
- how important the wheel and tire package are to the visual impact
- how much work FG parts can take to fit well
- The interior is remarkbly different when you start looking at the details, again easy to dismiss.
