adjusting idle on 87 911.. newbie help!
Hi all,
I have a 1987 911. have had it for a few years.. about 1k on it a year.. serviced regularly by good indie Porsche mechanic.. runs like a champ.. about 45k miles. problem: when i had my spring " tune up" .. i decided to get the ac converted over to 134 so i could use ac again. starts, runs fine. problem is when i have ac on... if i am going over 40mph and come to a stop light, etc. idle drops down and it stalls out. starts right back up and away i go. does not happen without the AC on.. so, i would assume it is the xtra load of the compressor. anyways.. took it back to my mechanic. he turned the idle up just a smidge ( i think from ~800 to 850??) does not stall out as much, but it still does. he told me it might and bring it back if so, and he will dial it up.. understandably does not want to set the idle too high.. find the sweet spot, etc. now.. the problem is he is over 40 minutes away. and it takes him a minute.. does not charge me.. but a pain in the neck to get to the shop. know i am rambling on.. but wanted to give the background.. here is my question: he puts the socket on the idle nut" for the slight turn..... but also.. he takes off a black cover on the drivers side engine wall and puts a wire to the little 6 pin circle thing. i assume i can do this.. no problem with the screw adjustment.. but what is the wire for? and what / where/ which pins is he connecting it to? i want to turn it up just a little more.. i guess i can take it back.. but if its something i can do myself in a minute.. i would just as soon give it a go. any diagrams.. pics,, etc of where to hook those alligator clips up when adjusting the idle nut? thanks! any input is greatly appreciated!!! rick |

The wire causes the ICV to go to a neutral position, basically stops the computer from adjusting the airflow to try and maintain idle. Without the wire any adjusting you do will be fighting the computer trying to change it back.
The wire goes from between B and C on the black plug you mentioned. ![]()

Your idle should be at 880 rpm when oil temp is at 90C (first hash mark above the chicklet on the oil temp gauge).
If you don't have a good way of reading RPM correctly then the tach needle should be just under 1k rpm when you are sitting in the seat looking at it. I suggest you get a voltmeter with tach function. Attach one lead to ground and the other to the coil's negative terminal to obtain rpm. ![]() HTH Scott
