Steering column noise
I have a 1983 911SC. The slightest turn of the steering wheel produces a rather loud noise. It sounds as if coming a bit lower down the column (maybe a foot or so). I removed the steering wheel and used pliers to move the column and it makes the same noise. I tried shooting some oil wherever I could and that didn't seem to help. I'm hoping that I won't have to tear my car apart to fix the problem.

Steering Column Noise...
Dexter,
There is a lower bearing in the steering column, plus there's universal joint type affair that connects the upper and lower steering column shaft. Any of these parts could be making the noise. Hopefully it's not any of the above since getting to them isn't an easy job. I would put your front end on jack stands and have someone turn the steering wheel while you get under the car and listen to see if you can identify where the noise is coming from. Be sure to put some safety blocking under the car before getting under it.

Have you tried simply removing the plastic clamshells to see (hear?) if the noise is interference? See the recent post from SCHOWARD (no relation!).
