901 Transmission Whine in 1st Gear
Hi all,
I've got a swb car with the 901 'dogleg' transmission. I'm getting a whining noise while the car is coasting with the clutch down with 1st gear selected. It's noticable after pulling off in 1st and shifting into 2nd gear. The other gears are fine. Is it just the way these dogleg transmissions are or does it need attention? Thanks, Chris |

Grady should be along soon, and be definitive, but it does sound like it requires some attention.
For starters, what is the serial # and type # stamped into the bottom rib of the case; it is the first place to get scraped under the tranny. Do you know if the differential has been upgraded yet?

Thanks for the responses. It's a 902/1 type transmission and the serial number appears to be 3280108.
Do any other early 911 owners hear this 1st gear whine with their cars? Also, what's involved in the differential upgrape? Thanks, Chris |

Is the whine something new, or has it always been there? If it's always been there how many miles have you owned/driven the car? Do you have records for trans work that's been done in the past?
