Question New member

Hello all. I've just bought my first 911. It's a 1980 Porsche 911 SC, the thing that gets me confused about it is it's a cabrio. How is this possible? From everything I have read Porsche didn't make a cabrio 911 until 1983. Am I mistaken some how? To further my curiosity, when I tried to check the vin I realized it's only a 10 digit, I hear they didn't even go to 17 digits until 1981. So, did Porsche make "any" cabrio prior to 1983. And if not, what is that thing sitting out in my garage, LOL. Other than these few questions, this car is flawless and a blast to drive.

Also, I would like to inquire if there are any owners in the Kansas City area. In my neck of the woods there aren't many 911 owners. thanx

Tony,

First of all: Welcome to the forum!!

If you post your vinnumbers, we can look them up for you and give you more clarity.
(for example your car could be a targa to cab conversion...)

And while you're at it, post a pic of your baby as well for us to admire!

It the VIN of an 1980 3.0l US SC alright. Judging by the bodywork thats been done and the 993 mirrors etc IŽd say its a conversion

Nive car, I really like the RuF front bumper! (and the color too)

According to elferhelfer.com (http://www.elferhelfer.de/fzident/fzident78-83.htm)

your VIN 91A0140633

91: Type 911

A: Model year (A= 1980)

0: Location of production (0= No value, not indicated where it is made)

1: type (0= turbo, 1= SC)

4: engine type (3= 3.0L, 4= 3.0L US version, 7= turbo)

0633: serial number ( for US cars: numbers 1 to 5000 are coupés, 5001 to 9999 are targas)

So it seems that your car is a US version 3.0L SC coupé (probably converted to a cab at some point.)

Nice and you are correct. As per Geronimo posting it's been converted at some point, nothing wrong with that unless you are a purist... which there is nothing wrong with that either (I'm not).

For reference, I got Serial # 0070, (long pipe version according to Geronimo , ) which was completed on the 27 of November 82 (from the CoA) for Canadian Export (it has the Canadian Package). On all the forum I log on, I can never find an earlier #, pipe up if you got one.

Enjoy the rides

Welcome to the Board. As I recall there may be another board member on here from Topeka, but he does not post often. There are several KC guys on the board.

You might also want to check out this group of which I am a member: The Kansas City Wrenching Society. Mostly 944 guys, but a few 911/993's. Great bunch that like to get together for drives and DE's up at Heartland. The Wrenching Society (Powered by Invision Power Board)

Tony:
I have a 77 Cab. It started life as a Targe and now has a 86 top on it.
I love it. I picked up mine for $5K as the guy that had it couldn't get it to
idle. My 77 is my 4th Pcar and the best so far. Like the guys here say, make it yours
drive it and enjoy it. I have been to a couple PCA events where the "purests"
(snobs) would start dry heaving when they see my SC flares with the Cab and
whale tail. Leather race seats, 6 point harness bar, rear seate deleted, and
a stero that I (and the neighbors) can hear at 80 with the top down.

Tony, congrats and welcome. I noticed the car had Cali plates, and those pics don't look like Topeka. That would be a fun long drive back if you drove it back to KS. There are a handful of KC pelicans, and a lot of pcar owners and enthusiasts. From guys like me who have to seek advice on paint chips, to Stephen Kaspar the turbo guru Panorama tech advisor. You can check out Kansas City Region Porsche Club of America for event dates if you join pca. Also, there are a few events a year up at the Heartland track. If you don't plan on doing your own wrenching and don't mind the drive to KC I suggest you cal Aaron at Bob Hindson Racing. BHR Bob Hindson Racing, Inc. Very good guy and knows his stuff.

Time to work on your garage... How about some photos.

Must be lucky as I have not come across the "purists" who would start dry heaving when they see my SC slanted Cab. Actually the last time I was at the track the GT2 and GT3 guys came around to see Das Babe. They are rather impress when I tell then that it a Canadian car.

GREAT looking car! Youhave already heard you have a converted targa. Looks like it was a quality job. As and 80, it allows you to become a member of the SCWDP - see my sig below. Paint looks great in the photos. Looks like it might be Ruby Red Metallic, like mine. Ruby Red Metallic was only offered in 1983 and 1984. Here is photo of mine for comparison:

Thanx all, the pics posted are from when i bought it out in San Diego, good observation there. This car has never seen a kansas winter (hope that's not gonna be an issue). I appreciate all the feedback everybody and as soon as I can get away from work for any local gathering/event. I look forward to meeting some of you. Again, thanx.

Wasn't a targa.

It was a coupe, not a targa, according to post 5 above.

Coupe is a LOT more work than a targa. Plus the targa already has all the targa/cab reinforcing in the body.

I wonder if there is any way to tell if they put any of the targa/cabrio reinforcing in the body. Most converters don't, but that looks fairly high quality.

Nice looking car.

Tony, did you think it was a factory cab when you bought it?

Tony,

Nice car! I dig the color! There aren't a ton of us Jayhawks on here. I'm about 2 hours south of you, but I can also recommend Aaron at Bob Hindson Racing. He's actually doing some more work for me next week. If you need anything, this is definitely the place to be. Congrats on your purchase!
