Porsche Crest PPI on 'disembodied' motor and motor source questions:

1) What are the things to do regarding a PPI on a motor that is out of a car? Will a compression and leakdown test yield useful results on a cold motor? Are such tests even possible?

I assume that head studs should be checked and a visual check for oil leaks might be somewhat helpful assuming the motor has not been cleaned up.

What else should be looked for?

2) I am looking for a Euro 993 motor (96-98) and have had little luck checking the usual places online. Looks like I will need to seek this motor overseas. Can anyone provide some assistance in finding a motor? I know that Jack bought his motor from Germany and perhaps Roland might be able to help . . . or anyone else who might have a clue!

Once again, thanks in advance!

Happy New Year!

Kurt

Kurt, I sent an email to my guy in (Mönchengladbach) Germany to see if he had any 96-98 engines with the brains (but not necessarily the exhaust). I'll let you know what he says.

Thanks Jack!

With these later motors does one have to, more or less, trust the seller regarding the motor's condition?

From your reports to the board, sounds like you got a really sweet deal on a very solid and reliable low mileage 3.6.

To the board:

I've always wondered about motors from wrecked cars. Can significant G forces cause damage to the internals of a motor even if the impact was away from the rear area?

Just curious...

Regards,

Kurt

Kurt, I wondered the same thing about the effects of an impact. The current motor in my 914 was from a totaled car. It had a significant impact in the rear which pushed it into another car and smacked the front as well. I paid a premium (I thought) for this car because the PO had over $6000.00 in receipts for the eng/trans alone (12-14000 miles on rebuild) not to mention the costs of the suspension peices. I have around 6000 miles currently on the eng. since the swap and have had no significant problems... and it tolerated several DE's without a hitch. I am satisfied that there has been no internal problems R/T the accident.
