Got me a Targa-Have questions

First, lets get to the pix........

She's an 88 w/ 55k miles. Pretty much all original.

This is my first older gen 911 as I had a 997.2 for a bit last summer. Took her on my first SoCal spriited canyon run early this am and was smiling the whole time.

I'd like to do some things and was wondering the best vendors/source for the following:

I'd like a thicker steering wheel, period correct?
Where can I find some wider rear Fuchs?
Speakers are blown & Id like to replace but with original sizes. ( I bought half a dozen cassette tapes of Ebay-all 80's )
Gotta get an exhaust so I can hear that flatty sing.
Best source for a bit more power while staying orig.
Suspension upgrade suggestions?
Need some Targa floormats & saw some in the CalCover catalog when ordering her cover. Anywhere else cheaper?

TIA
More pix to come after she's detailed.

Never thought an older girl wb so much fun.

Steering wheel: 930 variety looks good
Wider Fuchs: The classifieds, but be ready to spend $$$
Speakers: easy to find online and in a good auto stereo shop in a size that will fit.
Exhaust: SSI's or cat bypass with any variety of muffler
More power: SSI's or cat bypass and Steve W. chip
Suspension: replace all the rubber bushings due to age and go with Bilstein HD in front and Sport in rear for shocks.
Floor mats? Who cares.

+1 on the 930s steering wheel.
Wider fuchs- I'd go with 993 rims instead.
+1 on the SW chip.
+1 on the Bilstein HD setup.

IMHO, targas look better without the tail, but YMMV.

Enjoy!

Paul.

930 steering wheel also, I have one, btw, if you want it. $395 +shipping

Stay w/ the Fuchs, don't do 993's don't look as good and you need spacers. Fuchs look best.
Get a pair of 8x16's for the back and move the 7x16's to the front. Fit fine, no clearance issues.

Exhaust, I have a gutted Carrera muffler on mine, sounds great.

Get a Steve Wong chip.

Put a "WTB Carrera targa/cabrio floormats" in the parts thread. They need to be targa/cabrio mats, coupe won't fit. Also, earlier mats won't fit either. I've had good luck buying good used mats. If you want new, order from Pelican.

He said he drove SoCal canyons this morning, what else do you want? The suggestions about SSI's and bypasses should be accompanied by the explanation that this is not legal in CA.

I think the car looks fine the way it is. Take a few months to enjoy it and participate in events like the Ventura show in the fall. Drop by any of the shops in your area to talk cars. If they don't like to talk cars, not our kind of shop.

Have someone qualified look over the suspension, if not the whole car. You may need bushings even though the low mileage. And do pick up on the copious amount of info in the PP archives. You may stumble across some threads that answer most of your questions.

A lot o us have spent a lot of money so guys like you can read about it and not make as many mistakes.

Thanks all,

I wasn't sure about the tail, but it came with it as an factory option. Its growing on me. How hard is to find a non tail rear lid?

I plan on stayin Fuchs on wheels. Will the bigger set still fit if I mod to new shox and lower it?

I'd be interested in that 930 wheel, pix?

-Outside diameter will be the same so you should be fine.

Steering Wheel pics?

Main reasons I was suggesting 993 rims are cost, more modern look & less sidewall on the tires. Fuchs look great too!

Cheers,

Paul.

If you are patient, you will find a silver decklid, If yours is factory paint and the lid you buy is factory, chances that they will match are good. You could also put a 963 lid on there and have a spoiler that goes up and down, as 911's do from '90 on.

The way to do the Fuchs is move the rears to the front and install 8's (or 9's, if you have that kind of money) in the back. Get tires that match, of course. Suspension should not be affected that much, but it will steer a bit harder and the tail will be just a tad softer. As I said, no big deal until you really get to know the car and start driving it competitively or just aggressively.

And then, the biggest investment for handling and good laps times is to invest in you, the driver. As in seat time and with an instructor.

Please don't make a rookie error in the canyons. We've seen all too many cars messed up when people got going a little too fast. If you can find a big parking lot and go 40 MPH turning so the car is barely hanging on and lift off the gas, you'll find out in a hurry what 911's are all about. Make sure you're prepared for a spin out and push both pedals in. If you turn a 911 around backwards and the motor spins backwards, it can have drastic effects. Both pedals in.

My post is about learning the car and driving it safely. You're asking about performance, so this mini lecture is timely.

Thanks,

I've heard about them getting loose. The 4s was a no brainer. Would not break loose. I can feel that she needs to be respected. I plan on a DE or a day at Willow as I'm pretty close. Now which 2 pedals are you referring to? just don't lift, right?

I have 7x16 and 8x16's on my SC, (exactly the same body as your Carrera) it's lowered, new Bilsteins, they fit fine and look great.

If you can find a good deal on 9x16's, they will also fit on the rear. The 7's are it on the front, unless you use 944 Turbo (951) 8" wheels. Part numbers on 911 wheels (on the back of the wheel) start with 911.xxx.xxx, 951 wheels start with 951.xxx.xxx. They have a different offset.

You can use the same tires that are on there now, most do, they look and handle better because the sidewalls are more vertical.

I cannot take a pic of the 930 wheel until later tomorrow, but you can see one in the wheel thread. It has the embossed Porsche crest, 3 spoke, not the big gold crest (which I don't like, I don't like a big shiny thing right in front of my face and there's no other gold inside the car anywhere).

I like the Fuchs better too, they just look right (Paul's car looks good, but not for me). I am a big fan of the deep centers, do not like the look of the centers farther out than the rim.

My last car actually came with 993 wheels and all the spacers. It took me about 24 hours to get them and the spacers off the car and find and put Fuchs on. Much better. Sold the 993 wheels to a 928 guy and the spacers on Pelican.

If the Tail came with the car new, I guess I'd think hard about keeping it. I'm not a "Tail Guy". I like them on a 930 or the turbo look (M491), but not on a regular car. But if it was original from the factory, that skews it toward keeping it.

Whales and Targas go together like "Peas and Carrots" You have a beautiful car!

16x7's and 16x8's lower than euro, no rubbing, no spacers.

Sorry for the awful phone pic, I need to take new glamour pics of Glenda.

Thanks, that's killer. Good info. This place is huge. My head hurts from searching.

Any other cat back exhaust suggestions? Need to be able to pass smog. Where can I get info on SSI & a Wong chip? Tried a search but no source info.

Also, where can I find oem shift knobs in my interior color?

When I was removing my blown speaker grills, I noticed the small tweeter looking grills have no speakers behind them. Anyone know if those were options?

One last question, any way to brighten up the dim dash lights?

soba, more pix of those 9 in.rear wheels, I think you just cost me more money!
