Mystery Hole in Shroud
I am cleaning up a 1970 911T engine that I recently picked up. I am trying to figure out the purpose of the metal fitting (shown in photo with yellow arrow) next to the wiring harness exit grommet. It has a straight metal tube, approximately 13mm that comes out about an inch or so. It looks like some kind of hose would attach to it. Any guesses? Thanks!

Blower line to your airbox.

Thanks for the quick answer. So, what's the purpose ? ... just to put a little positive fresh air into the air cleaner housing??

That is the blower line that goes forward to the charcoal canister and then returns through the airbox. Its purpose is to purge the canister of gasoline vapors.
It is part of the emissions system.

That is part of the fuel evaporative system. It is not just emmissions. It vents the fuel tank and prevents explosive fuel vapors from venting into the air. Also helps gas mileage with no adverse effect on performance.
A hose connects to the nipple and runs to the charcoal cannister in the trunk, by the battery on the drivers side. Their would be a second hose that would attach to the air filter cover. they are the two lines at the bottom left of the diagram. You should make sure that all the hoses are in good shape. You should also have a plastic cannister in the drivers side front fender behind the headlight bucket, item #3.

Some race cars had a map sensor hooked up to one of those with hose and it would light a big light on the dash if there was suddenly no positive air pressure there. It would tell the driver the flat fan drive or vertical fan belt broke so the motor no longer had any air cooling...
Hard to tell otherwise with all the other noise and a helmet on. |

OK, I get it. Thanks all for the nice answers! It was a bit of a mystery to me as I am putting this engine into a '66 that doesn't have all the same plumbing.

My 69 912 has a 73.5 2.4 boxster engine and would love to get rid of some of the gas smell. Last edited by ppanagis@gmail.; 07-23-2010 at 12:59 PM.. |

you can buy the component parts in the classifieds - I did -- or on EBay
in the trunk you'll want to run new hose = be SURE it is rated for fuel vapor, not just PVC check to be sure the tank under LF fender is there and a small box tank under the cowl search on emissions, vapor carbon, charcoal for more info & diagrams |
