So the caliper halves...

Can sit in a box on the shelf...taking up space or I can assemble everything and bolt them to the chassis. The later. These came back nice the third time around. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322437553.jpg
The rest of the hardware is all done and waiting.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322437625.jpg
I by no means am a caliper expert...but rebuilding decent calipers (without issues),with the right tools has always been a simple gratifying task.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322437726.jpg
As I had new brakelines, I may as well bolt everything up to the suspension, and install the pads and nice fresh retainers

To the left...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322438265.jpg
The brake lines for the front were correct...I think I got sent SC lines for the rear. I don't think they are long enough to modify. So I will install the calipers and come back later...with the correct lines
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322438443.jpg
And after a trip through the dishwasher, and literally hours with carb cleaner and a wire tooth brush...voila. The cleanest 901 trannie that I know of...if that matters ;)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322438932.jpg
Worse than cleaning rear inner fender walls. But now the trannie starts out new life as "groomed". I will run a 901 instead of the 911 type for a couple reasons. Primarily, I like pull type trannies vs push. I think they are easier to adjust, but...means I need to swap out the clutch cable.

Plating looks good Speedo. I should've had a bit more of my hardware done in our batch. Either way, things are going together pretty well for me with all the clean, freshly plated parts.

What did you decide re: the painter?

BTW, that towel you are working on -- nice rainbow. And clean air too. :)

Lars,

Just curious...that whole suspension looks like you could eat off of it. Why not spend a few minutes cleaning up the hubs?

I've never seen those plated, but if they were given to the platers....figure roughly $400 for those. It adds up rather quickly.

With that thickness....they're near bullet proof in any condition.

I just meant a little cleaner and some BBQ paint or something.

Can't wait any longer...

One painter down...two to go. Two guys coming up tomorrow to look the car over and scratch their heads. I should be able to decide tomorrow night. I really didn't want to start on the engine till the car was gone...but I have run out of things to do to the car. My projects have already migrated to the gas tank, the oil tank, the dash and steering wheel etc. I moved the car today to get access to the engine (sitting on a furniture dolley) and pulled it out...looks a bit rough, but it turns :D
On a different PP thread...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/641798-ought-good.html
... I raised a few engine questions. When I freshen up the 2.2, I want to add a bit of ummph. The decision has been made to go with a 70.4 crank and rods and an E cam. I have all the necessary parts on the shelf. I need to check the crank, rods and cams I have and make sure they have no issues. If I can get close to 2.4 E specs (165 hp), I will be happy. The 2.4 E arrived at that number with MFI, and I will be pushing the old zeniths. The teardown started this afternoon...nothing else to do in 18 inches of snow.
I need to check in with the upholsterer...been several months too long. I have to remind myself I am recovering the BMW sport seats, he is also doing the dash...and I am having him restitch a "347" 914 steering wheel that I will use with a nice batwing horn button.
Pics on the forensic investigation of the engine tomorrow...fingers crossed. At least with an engine if you find "bad"...you just replace it. You don't face having to cut out, fabricate and weld back in. We'll see.

Journey to the center...

Could be worse. So this is where the missing seat insulation ended up. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323055441.jpg
I will spare the thread the pics of the over-cooked petrified mouse poop that I found next to the "bedroom". However, I did find out whey the crank was tough to turn.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323055565.jpg
Seriously, with all the grease soaked leaves and twigs, I'm surprised it wasn't a fire hazard. Isn't that how they started fires in the old days...friction next to flammables.
So I need to leverage myself to get the cam nuts free as I still only have two arms. They broke loose without event.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323055753.jpg
Turns out the mechanical early tensioners had "insurance" collars. I usually go with carrera tensioners, but we'll see...I may reuse the mechanical tensioners if they are still in good shape.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323055856.jpg
No surprises yet. The chain housings are loose now, but won't come free till the towers and heads come off. Hopefully if the weather clears(10 degrees F and dumping snow), I can get the top end off tomorrow night...enough for now.

There may be some other "goodies" inside, after seeing the collars?

The engine even still has the little breather snorkel with the rubber valve...may be a sign it was rebuilt with care in the past?

speedo 12-07-2011 08:45 PM

Goodies inside...depends on what you consider "goodies"

So the temperature finally rose to the point where the shop was not painfully cold. Monday night was -5 degrees F and tonight we were a balmy 20 degrees F. May not sould like much...but a huge difference when grabbing steel tools. Really no complications in dismembering this little beast. Down to the shortblock in no time...

Ah ha! I think I found one of the "goodies"...not sure whether this looked worse on the outside, or on the inside. Not sure wheter to call this 10w-40 tapioca, or .."soups up"!

Little crank that gets replaced...if someone needs a std crank in nice condition let me know. This is definitely "extra".
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323318195.jpg
Splitting the case revealed...nothing. Bearings actually looked very good. Oil pump spins freely but will get replaced by a 3.0 pump. I forgot that 3R cases had piston squirters...but they do. Intermediate shaft and chains look fresh too. No bits of shrapnel anywhere. Lots of gunk, but gunk is better than gunk with metal flakes.

I am assembling my list of rebuild parts, gaskets, bearings, rings and hardware needed for the rebuild.

But the best news is that the fourth painter interviewed is the right stuff. Great credentials, referrals and attitude. Targa goes away for 4-6 weeks this weekend. We decided that the trunk and engine compartment get body color vs being painted black. I am feeling good about the color choice  and the time frame. The guy has painted lots of 911s and focuses on higher end cars for higher end clients...makes me wonder why he wants to paint for me :D

Bagging, marking and boxing parts.

Sooner I get the parts to the respective recipients...sooner I get them back. Case, chain housings and cam towers go to get cleaned and in the case (of the case) get line bored. Everything fortunately measure std so nothing special will go on. I will either have them to the oil bypass mod, or I'll do it myself. The crank goes to get checked, magnafluxed, plugs removed and flushed and plugs reinstalled...then polished. Cams follow the crank, but just to get polished. Heads go to get cleaned and a valve job, rockers will be checked and if necessary rebushed...hopefully not...he will also bead blast the exterior of the cylinders and hone them. All the tin, engine mount and pulley covers as well as the fan/housing/strap and the valve covers get powder coated. I have decided to go ahead with the carerra tensioners, so I will clean/sandblast the chain housing covers and clear coat. What did I miss? Numbered the rockers to make sure they go back where they came from...looks like oil marker, but they are actually "dremeled".

T cams...spec nicely, but are for sale as I am going E
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1323650486.jpg

I'm psyched. Shop space finally, and a chance to settle down and order some of the parts I will be needing. The 15x7 fuchs are out spending time with "uncle Al" in California. Weird...with the car gone, and the engine going...I don't have any major projects. Seats should be done as well as the dash, and he will also get a 914 "347" steering wheel for a quick recover. I may be able to pick those up when I take the assorted engine parts to Denver.

Amazing what kind of turn-around you get if you don't beg and grovel...

Parts were distributed to the various shops Monday with at least a two week turn around expected. Yesterday the shop (evaluating the rockers, rods and heads as well as the P and Cs) called me to tell me they had started work and found that three cylinders (the ones with water in the intakes) were oxidized/corroded and he wasn't confident that a hone would fix things. I found a set of 2.4 cylinders last night I had stashed away...and ID'd the best four thinking I'd box them up and put them in the car, and wait for the next trip to the big city. This morning I get a call from the same shop...he needs the cylinders ASAP as he is ready to sandblast the group and then hone them today...crap, well er I guess that's good. Then the shop with the case and crank calls, case was cleaned and already line bored. Crank looks ok, but he sent it off to get polished...so come get the case...whoohoo!:D Glad I had the cylinders in the car. Off to the metropolis, dropped the cylinders and checked out the heads. We are replacing valve seals (all the valves were new enough to recut), fresh heads looked great. Rods, decided to replace the pin bushings...but he already had picked those up, so shortly they will be done. Grabbed the case and towers and chain housings on the way home. Ordered my rings and bearings and gaskets etc...three days out.
So I pick up the crank, heads,P and Cs, and powdercoated tin on Monday. I will need to create a "clean room" in the shop over the weekend so I can start to assemble.

speedo 12-17-2011 06:26 PM

But Mike...who else am I going to be able to blame?

Speaking of the painter...I was supposed to stop by yesterday afternoon to get some status pics. Didn't happen. I picked up my fresh heads, cleaned pistons and honed cylinders, and rebushed and sized rods. Recaros are also done, but no time for a sidetrip. Crank is done Monday, so I will grab the seats on the same trip. I'm excited...the recaros will irritate the "purists", but impress the "practicals" as they are completely reupholstered BMW sport seats. WE played with the bolsters and eliminated the adjustable under knee supports. I can't remember which BMW seat they are...but I believe they are the E 30 sport seats. Basketweave centers and perforated bolsters, with a headrest "chopped " to look more like the sport S headrest. If the seats come out as planed, I have another pair I will have him redo.
So with no car to work on...I have peripheral stuff to get done. Today is Zenith day.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174353.jpg
So is it spelled Kgnarly or just gnarly...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174485.jpg
I don't get it...these are air cooled cars, why do people feel the need to introduce water:confused:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174565.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174600.jpg
Midway through the disassembly I came to realize that these Zeniths are more complex than the comparable Webers. That doesn't speak to better, just more complex
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174767.jpg
And three of these screws fell out of one bank, and two out of the other (webers don't have these) and I am assuming there should be six in total.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174874.jpg
But they have no threads, so they are not screws...do they float in these orifices?http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324174959.jpg
Ok...I could use some help with these. If you want to weigh in...let'r rip.
So I need to get these dipped. I am not going to mess with the shafts and butterfies as once all the peripherals were removed...the butterfies move nice and freely, and the shafts are tight.

Small 380 mm project

I recently picked up a 914 380mm steering wheel in "known" rough condition. Seller represented the wheel fairly. I wanted a wheel to refinish to use with a restored batwing horn button. I will have the wheel "double -wrapped". As rough as it is...

I will need to sandblast and refinish the spokes, before giving to the upholsterer. I have restitched a wheel before...it was a b!tch and I trust the guy on a double wrap to do a better job than I can. I'll at least clean it up and repaint it. First pass through the sandblaster.

Just did this to a couple of wheels myself. Does your wheel require the horn ring mod or is it good to go? After a blasting and some Wurth paint they look great. I even took the time to tape it off to look like the factory paint.

speedo 12-18-2011 04:12 PM

Small projects without "meat" are boring...

But need to get done. The 914 wheel is good to go with the turn signal cancel ring modification. Once sandblasted, the occidation at the ends of the spokes was deep, and left some pitting. After a few coats of primer and sanding, I realised I needed something more. I used a very light -fine filler
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324252827.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324252853.jpg
This did the trick. Several finer and finer grits, plus a couple more coats of primer and we are ready for the black satin
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324252944.jpg
And batwing done...horn puck and trim ring are excellent

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324253086.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324253110.jpg
This front turn signal housing has seen better days. PO had a hard time with the light aluminum screw holding the backing plate. Couldn't get the screww unstuck and punished the housing in the removal. I need to stabilize the carnage and recreate one of the screw poles on the back side.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1324253305.jpg
No JB weld is not part of my diet, and I am not sponsored...it just works in a lot of places. What can I say. If garage monkeys over the years were/are able to do stuctural repairs with fiberglass and bondo...I can use JB weld when I want to for non structural repairs.

Granted that while these were a sport seat, they were produced a few years after the last Porsche sport seat came out of the factory. When the weather clears and I have more afternoon daylight hours (minutes), I will show a before and after picture of the seats. I have another set to go to him to get reupholstered. I am glad once I decided on black and the perf/basketweave that I stuck with it.

Back on track...

Actually I have been pretty busy, so I never fell off track. I hate getting halfway through a project and running into something that has issues and needs to be repaired (sent off) or replaced (ordered and shipped). The last two engine items I needed to get back...although they were for the outside of the engine...came today. Air filters and my fresh cooler.

Small front turn signal housing repair

Theses are becoming more and more expensive as the cars age. The pot metal degrades more quickly than "real" aluminum...so repairs or replacement are becoming more and more of a requirement. PO alerted me to the problem with the rear cap on this one. I started by repairing the damage done when the cap was forcefully removed.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325126756.jpg
Two screws hold the cap on...this one lost one of it's studs
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325126865.jpg
I took some aluminum tubing and cut the stud to the correct dimension and filled it with my buddy JB weld
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325126940.jpg
Now it needs to be postioned and afixed
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325126985.jpg
And done
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325127015.jpg
Drilled and the cap is now able to be secured correctly
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325127061.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325127082.jpg
While I am at it...I have some plastic air horns with either burned or cracked edges...lets see if my JB weld can bring these back to service

Hopefully engine starts to go back together this weekend.

So someone got confused about the short stroke to long stroke thing...

I never checked my rebuild parts (hardware and gaskets) when they arrived...note to self, in the future don't assume. Performed the perfunctory "time to make this a clean room" ritual and really cleaned up that side of the shop. For whatever reason, the sandblaster, the wire grinder and polishing wheel all ended up being "team buddies" on that side of the shop. So basically I had to de-debris ...everything. It's really like having company over for dinner, gives you an excuse to clean the house. If you don't have children...that last statement won't make any sense. So I mounted the crank to the flywheel, and cleaned it 4 or 5 times with wipes. Same for the rods which were refaced and had the pin bushings replaced. Grabbed the new rod bolts and nuts...assembly lube, and checked the rod bolt torque settings. Opened the new box of rod bearings and...gulp:(..wrong size. The box was for a 66mm crank. I thought I was clear that the bearings needed to be for a 2.4-2.7 crank, oh well. In a breif moment of desperation...I realized that I did have a fresh box of rod bearings for a 70.4 rebuild, but those were for a 3.0 ...different size. Ok, it is Saturday afternoon on New Years eve...I'm doomed. There is no way anybody is open with some Glyco 2.4-2.7 rod bearings. Suck it up...engine isn't going to get anywhere this weekend...these can wait.

Need to go to plan B. Hadn't planned on a plan B. I guess I need to dive into the Zenith carbs before I forget how they go back together...which may have already happened. They are mostly cleaned, but I still could use a couple hours with a metal wire tooth brush and warm soapy water to attack the sludge that didn't come off in the dishwasher. A couple hours of elbow grease later and we are ready to try to remember. I have a really good weber book, but nothing on zeniths, and the lame parts diagram with the rebuild kits labeled each of the parts in the badly zeroxed exploded diagram with arrows and numbers, but no coresponding list of parts included, what they were called, and where they went. On my own. Kind of sort of ready to go...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325557890.jpg
Sheesh...seems like twice as many parts as webers
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325557950.jpg
Started with the cores and built out. Find a threaded hole and then something the correct size that you can screw something into it...just kidding
Halfway home...

Butterflies feel nice and tight but move freely
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325558260.jpg
These cold start mechanisms (which I understand I need to ignore)...I still split (with some difficulty) and rebuilt...need more knowledge here. Feel free to PM me or gently weigh in.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325558443.jpg
Complete...well lubricated and only one washer as an extra part. I actually found where it went, so technically, no extra parts.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325558564.jpg
And with the benefit of some period K and N cleaner covers thanks to one of our fellow board members...and some new cleaners. Voila! Damn...they look pretty good! I couldn't resist bolting them up temporarily to my fresh powdercoated manifolds for a photo op...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1325558735.jpg
Nicest (cleanest) set of zeniths I have ever owned.
Correct bearings are here tomorrow...let the reassembly begin. Happy New Year everbody. Hope everybody has some sort of a project to look forward to...keeps us sane in these crazy times.

Paint progress??

speedo 01-11-2012 06:50 PM

painter guy

Well...I would like an update too. Having the typical painter-communication problem...I don't want to talk about it:rolleyes:
The good news is the progress I am about to make on the engine. I had a couple "speed bumps" thrown at me...but I think I am ok. It is amazing...I called several shops (that are friends) and asked the clearance question...and got several different, and I mean REALLY different answers. Here is the link
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/911-engine-rebuilding-forum/641798-ought-good-2.html
End result, I will do a clay clearance test first on the one cylinder, then mount them all up and do the same crank rotation test for interference. I judged that I have 3.5mm clearance between the piston skirt and the web in the case, but want to make sure I am clear on the rod bolt nuts. If I have no interference when all the cylinders are bolted up... from the counterweights...I should be good under normal conditions as expansion (from heat) of components will work in my favor.
Pics ...when I get them.

Clay test... but first

No word from painter man...no returned calls. I'm not worried. Just because he has my car and a "hefty" deposit...why would I be worried :(
To cheer my self up...these arrived. All the parts I ordered from Home Depot to finish the restoration :D
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326762164.jpg
As usual, a beautiful job. Four of these babies...15x7s
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326762243.jpg
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326762278.jpg
The clay test...part deux. I am fortunate in that where I roam in the Rockies, there are several good shops, and a number of people that are engine builders in their own right. So my resources for info when I have build questions...is good. Probably just the same as if I were in North Dakota, or Hawaii. My dilemna was that just like calling the IRS and asking tax questions...everytime I asked the question, I got a different answer. Intially I was only concerned about clearance between the sides of the piston skirts and the webing in the case. By the time I had finished asking my sources...I should now be concerned about these things:
1) rod bolt to piston skirt
2) counter weights on crank to piston skirt
3) piston skirt to webs
Great, be careful what you ask for. In addition I learned that the distance from center of rod pin to piston top edge is not different between 2.2 and 2.4 pistons (thanks Henry). Apparently the skirts are shorter on the 2.4, but longer on 2.2...thus my concerns. I have never been a fan of pre-assembly analysis. Like most people, I would rather just organize, prepare, prep and assemble. In this situation, I realize the need to do whatever is necessary to give me peace of mind in this build. Little frustrating after all the stories of the "trick" builds using 2.2S pistons in a 2.4S engine. Sounds like everthing just "bolts up".In Waynes book this was one of the "favored" builds...but I did not see any mention of clearance issues. Nor in Andersons book, did I see any discussion of clearance concerns.
So, armed with this vast array of non-knowledge:rolleyes: I proceed. The case is still bolted up from my previous one piston "depth" experiment.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326764226.jpg
I will perform two tests...the clearance test with all pistons and cylinders bolted up, and a clay test on holes one and two.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326764868.jpg
I think an orthodontist tried to do this to me as a kid with pepermint flavored clay to see if I needed braces..I puked (on the assistant) everytime she tried to put this stuff in my mouth. It was the assistant that finally decided that I didn't need braces. Open wide...

So with all the pistons attached...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326765173.jpg
And the cylinders installed...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326765325.jpg
I now cross my fingers and hope that when I rotate the crank I have no interference. Yeah...the gods like me ...at least until 12/12/12
Very smooth with zero interference. Maybe I had nothing to be worried about:confused: Passed the first test...now I need to disassemble and see what the clay tells me.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326765549.jpg
There is only one noticible area of clay contact...a very small area of contact on the clay on the right side webing on number 2. Hard to see, but the clay was pretty thick there...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1326765750.jpg
From my earlier depth test, I determined that the web-skirt clearance was about 3-3.5 mm which translates to roughly 1/8th of an inch. The clay was at way more than 1/8th at that point...so I should be good.
I had the pleasure of attending a Carquip function on Sunday am. There was a discussion of oil leakage caused by blow-by. The discussion was focussed on 356engines. Learned some... in fact alot of interesting stuff I can apply to future builds.
So here were two very nice builds I saw at the event...

Goal this week is to either get the painter to respond, and/or provide him bail.
And get this dang engine build going...finally :)

I almost made it out to Carquip, but bike ride went long. I would have made the effort if I knew you were going...

Fingers crossed on painter:confused:

What's the update, mad scientist?

speedo 02-20-2012 06:58 PM

Maybe my expectations were too high...paint and engine

Car has now been at the painter for 2 1/2 months. Same thing...infrequent answered or returned calls. His shop is a good hour away, so I am not inclined to saddle up and pay a surprise visit. He has a guy who created a novel webpage that I can pull up and check progress on a daily basis if I wanted to...and/or if there were actually pictures and progress. I am reluctant to post the link in the thread...simply limiting the disappointment to me. If there ends up actually being movement forward, I will activate the link on the thread. It is really winter here...cold and snowy, so we need the water, and the snowpack. The shop is cold...but I have to keep the energy up by doing small things. I have been doing a lot of ancillary stuff that seems to lame to post. The "getting ready" for the car to come home things. The engine build is underway, but that in and of itself has been fraught with issues...some of which have already been mentioned. My parts supplier didn't get the part about stroking the 2.2 using the 70.4 crank. As a result, many of my parts need to be returned and replaced. Main bearings, rod bearings, connecting rod bolts etc. :) Hey...expectations right? My choice of oil pump decided to bind noticeably after I disassembled and rebuilt it. So did the second pump. : Thanks to Haycait911 who sent me a third pump as long as I promised not to disassemble and clean it. So the case is together after much frustration...the clay work proved that the components were compatible. Crank turns freely, and I am looking forward to getting it to long block status.
Here we are...
