Help on 1983 Turbo Purchase.

In addition to my 83sc, which will stay with me forever, I am looking at buying a 930 for the weekends...

I looked at one last week listed for $23K , here are some stats:

- 1983 model, all stock, Black over black leather, 89K miles.

- Rebuilt engine by shop within 1K miles (no warranty given for rebuild)

-Rear brake rotors (only) were rusted (the car didnt quite stop during the test drive, I had to pump the brakes several times to stop car)

- One rear quarter panel was replaced due to accident (owner claims frame is intact)

- Owner doesnt know if the hydraulic chain tensioner update has been done...how much to do this?

- During test drive, i noticed oil pressure gauge was pegged at 4,
no oscillation with change in engine RPM....

- I also noticed the engine temp almost reached the first tick mark (200) during a short 10 min. drive in the COLD weather (my SC engine temp NEVER gets that high during the winter)

-During test drive, I also observed the car was sluggish from 1K to
3000 RPMs (not nearly as fast as my euro SC)

- The turbo worked at about 3500 RPMs, no problems there.

- Overall, paint and interior looked great, good tires, rims.

- no smoking or oil leaks.

So what do you think, is this a good deal with a positive PPI or is the owner asking for too much?

Thanks in advance.

you have just experienced turbo lag, it can be real exciting if it happens at the wrong time. but not to worry its nothing that can't be corrected. 23 seems a little high I would assume theres a little wiggle room. enjoy ...Pat

Speaking of turbo lag, do the 87-89 930's have turbo lag?

In other words, what year did the 930 become as fast as my 83 SC euro at lower revs (below 3500)?

Bruce Anderson adressed grey-market Turbos a while back in "Excellence" magazine. He mentioned that grey-market Porsches should be priced around 20% less than a comparable US spec car. He said that most Euro Porsches lead a harder life than US cars. Also, he maintains that many grey-market Turbos were either butchered during the federalization process or the paperwork was falsified. He had a horror story of someone that he knew who spent cash equal to the cost of the car trying to get it federalized.

Could be that you'd be better off paying the extra money for a US spec car.

hmmm...That's interesting. I've always thought that euro spec Porsches were more desirable (and therefore more costly) due to greater horsepower, additional cosmetic features (like side markers)and so forth.....all assuming you had a good car to begin with.

As far as I know all stock CIS turbs have this lag, A header and turbo swap will fix most of the lag, SC cams eliminate it altogether. These changes put about 320 hp on the ground , upgrading the IC makes sure the motor lives. The car will pull strong from 2k up. ... Pat

Opinion: 23k for a 83 Euro is a fair but not a great deal. The lag and the oil pressure is normal, my 86 does the same thing. I am not a fan of the Euro cars simply for resale value. I think with a little more work you could find a 79 or even a 86 for a little more money. I picked up my 86 with 43k miles on it for 25k Original paint etc etc.... Might be worth waiting for but if its just a weekend toy..... just my opinion

Don't know a thing about turbos othan that I want one and will hopefully have one some day. I just saw this on ebay before I read this post. Not to confuse the situation but it sounds like a US turbo may be less hasle in the long run and this one sounds nice.

good luck!

FWIW, I considered real hard a "86 930 in Pittsburgh. I didn't see the car, but it is at E&H Motors, call Howard at 412 221 9677.
I did a Carfax and it is clean but there is somoe problem with the mileage (apparently 68xxx miles).
I discussed the car with a local Porsche specialist who has not done a complete PPI but did drive the car. His initial impression is that the car is solid.
In late December, the car could be had for under $23K.
It is garnet Red and has BBS wheels.
Apparently original paint.
If you want send me you address and I will forward the Carfax.
I didn't buy it because I decided against the hassle of importing it.

E,

I have an 82 930 in the garage... What I can tell you is this...

They are a LOT of fun, I love mine. That being said:

Federal emissions wavers often don't count for *****. I have full EPA waiver documentation on mine, but Illinois requires me to test it. It fails, miserably. I then have to get VERY creative in order to get past emissions guys. (I'll give you some ways offline, e-mail me)

Parts are generally simple to get. However those calipers are VERY expensive so if you have braking issues, get a PPI.

The CHICAGO area of Illinois has emmision testing.

The entire rest of the state has NO smog laws in force.

Move out of Cook county and enjoy freedom!!
