OT: Need graphics expertise!!

I know this is OT...sorry...but it vital to the SCWDP!!!
We will dominate!

Well anyways...

I have the SCWDP logo but we need to convert it from bitmap to vector graphics file

I have acquired Adobe illustrator and I have photoshop but this is harder then I thought...

I have tried auto trace but that looks all messed up...not even close to the original shape.

I am downloading plugins like segmentation 1.0 but it does not work either...

anyone know a simple way to conver bitmap into vector? or is tracing with a pen the only way???

thank

MJ

MJ,

It kind of depends on which vector format, encapsulated Postscript is kind of touchy and application specific, buit HPGL is used by many sign and graphics companies.

What format is it you need to convert to?

There are several graphics conversion programs, such as Hijack 95 ... that I used to use on occasion, but haven't tried to install on this Win2000 machine.

well I guess the importance is that the file be in vector format to get the best detail out of the stickers...and I am having a bear of a time making the jpeg/psd file into an illustrator file...I can save as...but the picture is not made up of vectors...I will keep trying but this is MUCH more difficult then me Leland, Doug expected...

anyone have ideas?

MJ

MJ,

I understand what you want to do, and why ...

I guess Doug will have to ask the printer what file 'format' he needs to print the stickers.

Find somebody with CorelDraw or see if there is a Kinko's Copy center in your area. It is done simply by using the CorelTrace program within Corel Draw. Any questions let me know.

I've got Illustrator & Photoshop (and Pagemaker and Acrobat, ad nauseum), but don't see an easy way to do this conversion with the native Adobe app's.

Check out this link:
http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/bitmaptovector/index.htm

It refers to a number of available tools (some freeware, some shareware, some commercial packs), including Segmation 1.0 that you've tried.

However, the first suggestion listed (ImpressionX for Windows) is only $40 . . .

Cheers!

MJ,

I just tried the zdnet.com site for downloads and did a search for "vector". It found several hits for shareware/demo programs. I'm not sure which might work, but you might want to give this site a try. I just tried the Detector 2.2 - it's shareware - about 2 Meg in size, but it looks like it requires registration for $40 to access Vector features. I'll try some others.

Let me know if you need any help.

Unhappy

I am telling you guys, try Corel. Adobe doesn't have the easy capabilities to do this. I do this crap for a living and change bitmaps to vectors at least once a week. The Coreltrace program changes scanned images to vectors and allows you to edit them freely in CorelDraw. Quit looking for something that might work and see who might let you use Corel for 15 minutes and just get it done.

making graphics

I do this stuff all the time. Email me the design as a jpeg (hi res as you can) and I'll make you something that will work and look pro. That's a good question about what type you want- vinyl or full color, but I haven't seen the logo. I make graphics for commercial vehicles as well as custom stuff for lowriders, motorcycles and such. adgx@centurytel.com

It's DONE! (See the final design in a previous thread.)

And a tip of the hat to Mark (82SC), Bob Tilton, and a cast of thousands of supportive SCWDP members.

Keep the SCWDP faith!

When the stickers are on your window, tool-box, shoe bottom (!!), then we can cheer.

Just a little update.....
The good news:
I took Mark's painstakingly executed files to the printer today.

The baad news:
We missed an open spot in the production queue, and the stickers may take a bit longer to complete.

Stay tuned, and as always.....
Keep the SCWDP faith!
