So what do early car owners do about replacing front strut ball joints?

My car has tight front ball joints only because I believe they were replaced in the restoration. What do I do when I need strut ball joints for a 66 front end? Which years had the hard/impossible to find ball joints? 65-67?

If they seem 'stiff', take a syringe and put a few drops of 90W hipoid transmission oil past the rubber boot while manipulating the joint in every direction.

All fails, buy new ones from our host.

if you don't care about "all original"

Bolt in a complete front end from a later car.

On my 912 - now sadly gone - I bought a complete front suspension - center beam, A arms, steering rack, struts, brakes - everything - from a later car. It bolted right in.

Result - safer, far more solid front end, a little more brake authority and easily replaceable ball joints and bushings.

High speed stability, feel, and parts replacement are all far better with this approach!

If you don't care about originality, in my opinion this is the only way to go.

Grady,

Those are the lower ball joints? I thought some joint in my suspension was no longer obtainable. Was I mistaken?

MPETRY,

What year did you swap in and what did you do about brakes. Just hook them up to stock master cylinder or did you have to change that too?

Says "Ships Monday, 26 in stock." (At only $174.25 ea. )

I'm not sure what MC you have, but you should put in a dual circuit if you don't have that. Otherwise, you can run A or S brakes on the stock MC.

I used the same master cylinder - however that car had the dual circuit master.

I believe the donor parts came from an 80 SC that had an engine fire.

One other comment - it's far better to buy the whole set up rather than try to mix and match the parts, as the brakes and A arms may not be compatible with your car's setup. Replacing "the whole thing" is a great thing if you don't need your car to be 100% compatible.
