911 01 gear set preload procedure?
Hi I have a 1970 911t with a 911 01 5 speed tranaxle that needs a new drivers side cover because the ring that holds the clutch cable has broken off. I understand that when replacing this part the gears need to be preloaded before reinstalling the transaxle. Does anyone know what shop manuals describe this procedure and if so can anyone scan the appropriate pages for me ? Thanks in advance !

Does anyone know if the 911 01 transaxle is considered a type of 901? most references are to 901 and then 915 types without refering to my 911 01.

Yes, it is part of the "greater 901 family" of transaxles.
Wow, I do not think you need to get a new differential side cover. try some JB weld if you have the piece of the ring. Or a piece of welding rod maybe? How bad is it "broken off"? I believe that the proper tools for preload and lash in the final drive were only available at the factory and cannot be found now so you are out of luck there. Try the Early 911S Registry Forums (you can join with any early 911- 911T included) for more info. You would have to have all metal pieces with exactly the same thickness, then count the number of shim gaskets ore reuse them in order to get the same, factory-set specs.

Hi, the piece of the ring is gone. It was missing when I bought the car 5 years ago. I have been making do with temp. fixes since . I am contemplating farbricating aan aluminum part similar to the one one used on the 915 type trans. ( except reversed ) that with secure to the 2 small bolts on the cover beneath the old ring.

I fabricated something similar for my 914/6 when I put a 1970 type clutch in it. If you go that route, make sure you make the bracket strong. There's quite a bit of force on that mount, and you don't want it to flex when you actuate the clutch.

To answer your original question, when you are installing the differential side cover correctly, you are really preloading the outer diff bearings, not the gears/gearset. For the 901, the Workshop Manual states that there should be a .15mm (.006") gap at this interface prior to torquing down the side cover nuts (section "R", pages 44-45). Slightly tighten 2 nuts, and check gap between cover and gasket with a feeler gauge. Gap is adjusted by changing the thickness of the S1 ring gear side spacer.
FWIW, in Jerry & Bruce's tranny class, Jerry stated .010" gap for the preload works AOK. You really just need to make sure that both the bearing races are seated properly and that there is a nice even gap of around .010" (with gasket in place!) before torquing the cover down to make sure you get those bearings preloaded. Hope that helps...
