Post Stripped a head nut.... How do I get it out..

Hello all,

While removing the heads on my 930 I stripped a head nut....

FYI the head nuts on the exhaust side are tricky... I found out a little too late that the easiest way to get the two center ones out is to remove the valve cover studs. Got one of the nuts off the head stud but the damage was done on the other...

Any ideas on how I can get it out?? Should I try a larger hex socket (say 11)?? or what about maybe reverse tapping the nut and then threading in a bolt that I can put a socket on??

Any advice would be appreciated.

Had the same problem with the 930 we just rebuilt. Very sharp chisels and a hammer, we fileted the nut right off the stud. Stud was sacrificed of course but then most exhaust studs are trash anyway. Plan on replacing lots of 'em!

Then again one of my head BOLTS stripped on my VW while I was replacing the head on it a few months ago. Used a plasma cutter to melt the head off. Quite effective. Very satisfying. Plasma cutter GOOOOOD!

buy a #6 tapered, spiral easyout, not the square cut one. use a disc cutter to cut the end off just to the point where it barely enters the allen head nut.(a #6 won't work "as is". when it's shortened, it gets wider, being that it's tapered). pound it in hard so it gets a good bite, and snap it loose with a breaker bar. it will actually flare out the top of the nut. if it doesn't, you didn't get it short enough. i've had to do all the lower nuts occasionally on 3.2s.

And of course install high temp anti-seize compound when re-assembling, so the next tear down will be a piece of cake.
