Turning axle stubs free play, backlash?
When I rotate transaxle flange clockwise the other counter I get a small bit of free play, ring and pinion backlash? Also installed new seals in two different 911/01's and noted on one retaining bolts had nipple at end of bolts the other none, they were not broken off just never existed. Which would be correct for 70-71? Both have Quaife TB differentials. Thanks

There was old information here several years ago about the updates on the 911 axle with the nipple on the bolt. We, the owner and I, of a 70T got the update items and when we opened the hubs there was the update in place and owner is original owner from 1970 and never had the trans worked on.

If they have Quaife differentials, they don’t have the ‘simplified differential’ problem. I suspect a PO re-used the stretch bolts with tits. The tits just don’t do anything now.
Bruce, There was a period of time in about 1971-72 when the ‘70s were still in warranty that P+A installed the update whenever they had the car in for service. Porsche was scared of having to replace transmissions under warranty. The earlier cars; 1968-69 were left to fail when the stretch bolt tits wore off. Best, Grady

Thanks all, now understand on stretch bolt's. Was I correct the free play I'm feeling in both is R&P backlash?
